Last week’s flash floods brought with them a much-appreciated respite from the scorching sun. But alas, the pavement has now reheated and we’re back to fry-an-egg-on-the-sidewalk weather. Well don’t worry, because The Weekly Free can offer you some of the best things in life, which — like a sweet summer thunderstorm — come at no cost to you. Be forewarned, it’s hot enough out there to:
Write with Charcoal
Tuesday
The International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPETH) is in town for a conference this week, and you, too, can be a part of the preservation of the art of calligraphy by attending its open house. A presentation by Michael Sull, penman extraordinaire, is the main feature of this community event, which also includes handwriting demonstrations. It all goes down from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Hotel Albuquerque at 800 Rio Grande N.W.
Dance like You’re on Fire
Wednesday
Dangerous Curvz, an eclectic local dance band with a broad range of styles, performs from noon to 1 p.m. The event, which will also feature BBQ fare and ice cream at an additional cost, takes place on the Cornell Mall, which is on the east side of the SUB. Bring an appetite for food and entertainment, and get satiated.
Joke about Cremation
Thursday
“Get Low” tells the story of Felix Breazeale’s living funeral, which saw more than 8,000 attendees. French Funerals and Cremations hosts this no-cost screening to commemorate the 75th anniversary of his once-in-a-lifetime (literally) funeral service. Light refreshments will be served, and a discussion will follow the picture show, which runs from 5 to 8 p.m. at 1950 Pine Road N.E. in Rio Rancho. Get more info and RSVP online at frenchfunerals.com
Ironically Bundle Up
Saturday
The Hipster’s Craft Fair is the place to cure your no-quilt guilt. Artisans will be at Hip Stitch (7001 San Antonio N.E.) with homemade blankets, pillows, scarves and all manner of home and fashion accessories. There’ll also be a sweet quilt raffle, so resist the urge to rebel against fabric and maybe support some local artists, if only with your presence, this Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Fish for Pool Sharks
Saturday
Join your fellow not-so-ballin’ ballers at a free 8-ball pool tournament. A $100 cash prize is offered to the winner, and runners-up are entitled to $25 gift certificates for the host establishment. Plus, there will be a speed pool demonstration followed by competition. If billiards is your thing, make sure you’re at Doc & Eddy’s (6040 Brentwood N.E.) from noon to 2 p.m.
