The Weekly Free

As the summer comes to a close, many students will find their wallets barren, their bank accounts in the red, and the shattered remnants of the piggy bank bereft of coins. Never fear, here are a list of free events to squeeze out that last bit of fun before the fall term begins.

Mindful museum-going
Tuesday

The New Mexico Holocaust and Intolerance Museum may not be the best place to take a date, but it does make for an interesting couple of hours. Located in the Downtown area at 616 Central Ave. S.W., The museum chronicles both the atrocities and sacrifices made by those who lived through World War II, Rwanda, the Armenian genocide and many more. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Hands-on photography experience
Wednesday

Maybe you’ve been interested in photography for years or maybe mom just bought you a cheap point-and-shoot for graduation. Whatever the reason, the Guerrilla Photo Group can teach you how to take stunning photos on any camera. Lessons and impromptu photo shoots are available every Wednesday, from 5:30 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. at 500 Second St. S.W., Suite 9.

Share your story
Thursday

Those with a burning desire to stand in front of a crowd and read a piece of original work should head to The Source, at 1111 Carlisle Blvd., S.E. around 7 p.m., for Dime Stories. There, attendees can sign up to read their best prose and listen to those of other Burqueños.

Check out local art
Friday

Want to get a jump on sounding smart for art history class? The monthly Albuquerque ARTScrawl will be touring in Old Town from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. The best part about the tour is that it’s self-guided, so pick whichever gallery you’d like to start with and make your way at your own pace. This month’s museums are Weems Gallery, Blackbird Gallery, Yucca Art Gallery and Purple Sage Galleria.

Music and atmosphere
Saturday

Early birds can enjoy free samples, live performances and a community atmosphere from 7 a.m. until noon at the Downtown Growers Market at Eighth and Central in Robinson Park. The market runs every Saturday until October.
