The sugar skull could be one of the top ways to celebrate Dia de los Muertos in Albuquerque. As spirits are welcomed back into the lives of many during this holiday season, what better way than to dress as the traditional calavera to honor the deceased? Here are eight simple steps to create the skull look of your dreams.
You will need makeup brushes in different sizes, primer, concealer palette, light foundation, white translucent powder, black acrylic based face paint, white acrylic based face paint, black eye shadow, fake eyelashes, lash primer, mascara, acrylic-based face paints in bright colors, eye shadow in multiple colors and black eyeliner.
1) Use a concealer brush with a primer to cover the entire face. Follow the primer with concealer and foundation. Then dust over the face with a white translucent powder.
2) With a small paintbrush and black face paint, draw a rim around both eyes and, for a more detailed effect, draw the outline of petals around the black face paint.
3) Line both eyelids with black eyelines and then draw a thick crescent shape inside the rim with the same black paint on both eyes.
4) With an eye-shadow brush, blend from the inner corners of the eye with a brightly colored eye shadow. Do this for both eyes. Fill the remainder space of the eye blending with another bright eye shadow.
5) From the center of the nose draw two triangles on each nostril and fill these and the lips with black paint. Extend the black paint from the corner of the lips to the top of the cheekbone.
6) Using a small angled brush, draw short, vertical lines on the mouth, and fill them with white paint to make the teeth.
7) Make black shadows underneath the cheek bones and blend with a medium-dark powder to create contours.
8) Use black paint on the forehead and other bare areas to draw a design. Fill in with bright colors for contrast.
