Whether you’re a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior in college, the temptation to spend money is everywhere and before you know it, there’s not a penny left to shop for the important stuff. And let’s face it, it’s hard to put your foot firmly on the ground and stick to a budget when all you want to do is have fun.

Deodorant is one of the necessities in life, so why not take up a hobby that not only is fun but will also help you save money?

Maggie Shepard is the co-founder of the Albuquerque Old School, which offers a variety of classes on making popularly purchased items. Shepard has a simple and cheap recipe to make deodorant.

You will need a stove and a pan, cream-based coconut oil, shea butter and cocoa butter, vitamin E, essential oil of your choice, cornstarch, baking soda, probiotic capsules, and a container or tube for the finished product.

Step 1
Add 1 teaspoon of cocoa butter, coconut oil and shea butter into the pan. Put the stove on low heat until the oils melt and blend while tilting the pan to keep the oils together.

Step 2
Add in 1 tablespoon of baking soda to the mixture and 2.5 tablespoons of cornstarch. Slowly stir over the heat until evenly distributed.

Step 3
Take the pot off the heat, add in a few drops of the vitamin E and quickly stir. Follow this immediately with roughly 15 tiny drops of the essential oil.

Step 4
Open two probiotic capsules, pour into the mixture and stir.

Step 5
Once the liquid is without lumps, pour into the container and allow it to cool off before use.

Step 6
To use, put a pea-sized about on your finger and apply to your underarms. The deodorant will last up to six months.
