Editor,
The Kirtland Air Force Base jet fuel spill of 24 million gallons is the largest poisoning of underground water in the history of the United States. 24 million gallons is almost twice the size of the Exxon Valdez disaster. Read the powerful lead story in the Nov. 28 – Dec. 4 issue of the Weekly Alibi exposing this catastrophe.
Every gallon of jet fuel contains enough of the cancer-causing chemical EDB to contaminate millions of gallons of drinking water. No amount of EDB in drinking water is safe.
I appeal to the mayor, county commissioner and city council: if China had caused this massive threat to Albuquerque’s water, would you take a strong public stand to stop it? If al-Qaeda were responsible, would you take a stronger public stand to stop it? If Russia had created this underground river of poison to wage chemical warfare against us, would you take a stronger public stand to protect our water? Are you scared to stand up to our own U.S. government?
Are you afraid of offending Kirtland Air Force Base and the voters who work there? Are you scared of being branded unpatriotic and extremist? Do you have the conscience to demand state and federal action now? Will you do your damndest to protect the water supply for more than half a million people and possibly millions more into the future?
Both the county commissioner and the city council usually meet twice a month. Anyone can speak for up to two minutes on any concern in the public comment periods. Call to find out when they meet next. The place for both is in the basement auditorium in the city/county building at 5th and Marquette N.W., Downtown. Arrive early to sign up to speak. The meetings are telecast live on government cable channel 16.
I have spoken to both many times on many concerns. I write my message down in advance. I practice reading it and time it to two minutes. I deliver it with passion. I urge you to exercise your freedom of speech and conscience.
