Volleyball: Surprises abound at intrasquad scrimmage

In sports, it is almost guaranteed that not everything is going to go as planned.

On New Mexico’s Fan Appreciation Night, it was hard to tell what the plan was amidst Silver’s 2-1 victory over the Cherry team during Thursday night’s intrasquad volleyball scrimmage.

Before the match, Nelson said he was going to give fans a glimpse at what his starting rotation could potentially look like. That rotation was the Cherry team, as assistant coach JJ Glavan had to fill a spot on Silver’s spot.

While Glavan stole the show, collecting 12 kills on a .375 hitting night, Cherry did not look like a starting rotation ready for opening day, just a week away.

There were a multitude of errant passes and miscommunication errors, it was apparent that the Cherry side of things was not scripted. Senior setter Hannah Johnson said that the team is not worried at all about its performance.

New things take awhile to get used to, Johnson said. With two newcomers playing alongside veteran players, there is going to be some bumpy spots in play.

“It was fun to watch from a different perspective,” Nelson said. “I thought our freshmen did a really good job, some of our newcomers.”

However, Silver seemed very calm and collected throughout all three of the matches. Without letting things get out of hand too early, Silver came back from a 17-13 hole to take the first set 25-22 of the three game series.

Cherry battled back with a 25-22 win of its own to even the match up at 1-1. The momentum wasn’t enough to carry Cherry past Silver’s prominent passing and Glavan’s solid hitting performance. Silver took the final set and the match by a final score of 25-21.

“I though it was really good. We have really good competition on both sides of the court,” Johnson said. “If it would have gone to five, I think we would have won.”
