Editor,
There are still those who stubbornly cling to the myth that there is a “moderate” opposition in Syria that the United States must support against both the Syrian government, ISIS and al-Qaeda.
Army Gen. Lloyd Austin III, chief of U.S. Central Command, spoke recently in front of members of the Senate Armed Services Committee and said that the U.S. has trained approximately “four or five” moderate rebels to fight in Syria. In light of this new information, the U.S. should view Russian involvement in Syria as a positive development in regards to defeating ISIS and al-Qaeda.
The Syrian government has requested Russian assistance in its fight against religious extremists, and that is their right to do so. Whether they like it or not, it appears that the Obama administration is going to have to swallow its pride and accept the fact that Syrian president Bashar al-Assad will continue to be the head of state in Syria.
The American people should not doubt that if the only two options in Syria are the imperfect, secular regime of al-Assad or the two-headed monster of ISIS and al-Qaeda, then the world is clearly better off with al-Assad.
The recent failed attempt to torpedo the nuclear deal with Iran demonstrates that there are certain elements in the U.S. government which have strong sympathies with Zionism. These elements have consistently been calling for the overthrow of the Syrian government, even though this is not in the national interest of the people of the United States.
Hopefully, the desire to safeguard the national interest will win out at the White House and the Obama administration will join hands with Russia and Syria to reach a political settlement to the Syrian conflict.
Sincerely,
