Letter: SexUality Week aims to emphasize inclusiveness, knowledge

Editor,

Next week, Nov. 9-13, the Student Alliance for Reproductive Justice at UNM and Self Serve Sexuality Resource Center are bringing Sex Week back to UNM campus. We are working with many campus and community partners like Young Women United, the LGBTQ Resource Center, Medical Students for Choice, Nursing Students for Choice and Planned Parenthood of New Mexico (among many others) to make this year the best it can be.

This year we are calling it SexUality Week because we think this title is more inclusive of the sex education work we are trying to do on UNM campus and the multiple identities and understandings of sexuality we are trying to be inclusive of. The purpose of Sex Week is to provide comprehensive, educational and pleasure-focused sexual health information to the students and community of UNM without apology.

We know that with better sex and relationship education adults are healthier, aren’t ashamed of their bodies or their desires, are consent-aware and can maintain healthy, pleasurable relationships with other consenting adults. We will hold a Sex Ed A Go Go event on Wednesday in SUB Ballroom A at 7:30 p.m., as well as many other events that cover consent, safer sex, sexual identities and sex ed quickies, among many more.

In solidarity,

Shaya Rogers
