Letter: Pro-life movement stands against violence

Editor,

It is important that subpoenas for the names of faculty, students and staff at UNMHSC and Southwestern Women’s Options who are involved in potentially unlawful fetal research be supported by our community. This is an internal congressional investigation, and the names of the people involved will be given to the congressional panel, an extension of the government. Avoiding the release of these records is not unlike telling the FBI you’re not going to comply with handing over the names of people you know so that you can protect them from any violations of the law that they are being investigated for. The names will never be disclosed until after the investigation is complete and someone is found guilty.

Should this occur, they would have much bigger problems than their names being disclosed to the public. We aren’t seeking to shame or harm anyone; that is the opposite of the pro-life mission, and any people who call themselves “pro-life” and then murder other human beings in an act of violence are misrepresenting the worldview of valuing and respecting all life. Students for Life UNM does not endorse any act of shaming or violence towards a post-abortive man or women, an abortionist or a pro-choice member of society. Our mission in this situation is to bring the truth to light, and to protect all people, born and preborn.

Last, in light of the terrorist attack on Brussels, we can all agree that the majority of Muslims are not terrorists nor are they violent. Growing up Muslim, and still having many Muslim friends and relatives, I can attest that most Muslims are peaceful and tolerant of other religions. Even though Muslim terrorists continue to commit violent crimes, they do not represent all Muslims. I would ask that you would extend this acceptance to the pro-life movement, which is meant to protect women and babies from the violent act of abortion. Yes, several people have killed and shamed in the name of being “pro-life,” but they do not embody nor represent the pro-life mission.

If you are concerned against violence, I would encourage you to take a look at abortion and how it burns, dismembers, scrapes, cuts and painfully kills preborn babies - and in our state, babies that are full-term and viable - for any reason. Promoting and acting out violence on the most vulnerable humans in our world is what we should all be concerned about and eager to end together.

Sincerely,

Sade Patterson
