What’s the best way to celebrate Independence Day?

Caroline Cabiedes, senior, evolutionary anthropology
“For me, it used to be about fireworks and going out with family. Now I kind of just stay home, or watch fireworks from my house because there’s a lot of illegal ones around, or I go party. It’s mostly not even partying, more like sparklers and a beer.”

Gino Gonzales, senior, theatre
"For me it's never been a huge deal. There were always just barbecues that my family put on, but for me it never really meant a lot. This is what it was, and this is why we do it, but for me it seems a little outdated."

Cindy Botello, junior, IFDM
“Well every country has its own birthday, right? July the Fourth just happens to be ours for different reasons, I guess. I have somewhat mixed feelings about it, I’m not sure. For the most part it’s a pretty cool day just to relax back and be super patriotic for one day. You know, the usual, throw a lot of fireworks either legally or illegally, whatever floats your boat. Consume a lot of barbecued items, some ice cream. Probably outside. Maybe throw a football. I don’t know, classic stuff.”

Nathan Rimbert, sophomore, journalism and mass communication
“I usually spend it with my family. Barbecuing, eating. Fireworks usually, something that was kind of more exciting when you were younger. Probably the best way, is to spend it with family and friends, like any other holiday. When you’re younger it’s just about bright colors and stuff, but now you kind of think about it more seriously.”
