Cost of Living At a Glance

With a new freshman living requirement to be implemented in fall 2018, we took it upon ourselves to crunch the estimated living costs for options on and off campus, and talked to students on the subject in the hopes of painting a picture of what this new requirement could look like.

Note: these numbers represent the cost of mandatory dorm living for fall 2018 if no discounts are provided to freshman, of which none have been discussed at press time.


UNM Living, Current Housing Rates

Traditional Dorms

Single Occupancy – $559

Over one semester – $2,795

Double Occupancy – $489

Over one semester – $2,445

Deluxe Single – $589

Over one semester – $2,945

Available Meal Plans - Memberships include unlimited club access to La Posada and 2 Club location swipes per day in separate meal periods across campus.

The Teal Club

50 dining dollars + 3 guest passes

$1,900 for one semester

The Silver Club

300 dining dollars + 6 guest passes

$2,100 for one semester

The Cherry Club

500 dining dollars + 10 guest passes

$2,225 for one semester


Cheapest Possible Option for On Campus Living

Traditional Dorm, Double Occupancy Rate for One Semester: $2,445

No Car/Parking Permit: $0

Teal Club Meal Plan: $1,900 semester

Total: $4,345 for one semester


Costliest Possible Option for On Campus Living

SRC/Redondo Rate for One Semester: $3,195

Lomas Structure Parking Permit: $499

Cherry Club Meal Plan: $2,225 for one semester

Total: $5,919 for one semester

Off Campus Living Options

Sun Village

Studio Apartment: $560/month, or $2,240 for one semester (or four full months)

Shuttle to UNM: $100/semester

Average groceries: $100/month, or about $400 for one semester

Electric and cable/internet: About $140 to $160 for one month, $560 to $640 for one semester

Total: about $2,740 for one semester


Living At Home

Rent: $0

South Lot parking permit: $175 for one semester

Food: $0 – $400 for one semester

Total: $175 – $575 for one semester
