In an email sent out to UNM students on Monday night, the University advised to be on the lookout for a man who came to campus with a gun last week and was subsequently released from the Metropolitan Detention Center on Monday, according to the email.
The man, Daniel Arushanov, is not a student, and is banned from campus. He was also violating a protection order, according to the email.
According to a UNM Police report, UNMPD officers were dispatched to the SUB in reference to a male, in possession of a firearm. Upon arrival, Arushanov was sitting alone at a table in the food court area, where there were also other students and faculty.
According to the report, he was wearing a tie, bows in his hair and an “I voted” sticker. When the officers approached him, they saw a holstered handgun in plain sight on his right hip.The firearm, a Smith and Wesson .40 caliber semi-automatic gun, was loaded, with one round in the chamber and eight in the magazine. Officers secured the weapon and handcuffed the subject.
When officers looked at Arushanov’s records through the National Crime Information Center, they discovered a current protection order issued against him, specifying that he is prohibited from possessing a firearm. The mandate was issued in California on Sept. 16, 2015, and is in effect until 2020.
Arushanov’s car was later located illegally parked in a handicap parking space in front of Parking and Transportation Services at 2401 Redondo Dr. NE, according to the report. Following the arrest, the vehicle was towed, and an officer took inventory of its contents. A loaded Mossberg model 88 shotgun was found in the trunk, along with 15 slugs around 59 rounds of 20 gauge ammo and 60 rounds of .40 ammo. The weapons and ammunition were tagged as evidence.
After the subject waived his Miranda Rights, an officer interviewed him. Arushanov said he was aware of the protection order and was carrying the handgun to determine law enforcement’s response time, according to the report.
Arushanov is described in the email as being 24 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, about 155 pounds and having dark brown hair and brown eyes.
Students are advised to not approach Arushanov and immediately contact UNMPD if they see him on campus. UNMPD can be reached at 277-2241.
