Harassment in the Communication and Journalism Department
On Nov. 3, an officer met with a Communication and Journalism instructor at the UNM Police Department station at 2500 Campus Blvd. NE, after she claimed a former student was harassing her, according to a UNMPD report. The male student, who was enrolled in a spring 2016 course, was disruptive in class and did not complete assignments. She sent an email to him in April, warning him that he would fail the course if he did not drop the class or complete extra credit assignments. He continued to take the course and did not complete any extra credit work; thus, he received a failing grade.
He began sending her angry Facebook messages, speaking negatively of her and blaming her for his issues. She discovered the messages only after he sent more in August or September. Although he apologized in one message and asked her to forgive him, the message that followed was abusive.
After reading the messages, she attempted to block him, according to the report, but discovered he had already blocked her. Some of his messages included personal information about her that she had not disclosed to him, which concerned her. Although the male is not a current UNM student, he still lives in the area, and the instructor is concerned for her safety.
The officer who spoke with her gave her information on obtaining a protective order. The police report will be sent to the Office of Equal Opportunity and the Dean of Students.
Domestic violence at UNM Business Center
On the afternoon of Nov. 7, officers were dispatched to the rear of the UNM Business Center at 1700 Lomas Blvd. NE regarding a male subject beating a female, according to a UNMPD report.
The male was reported to have been wearing a bandana, gray jeans and a black shirt. Upon arriving at the building, officers saw a male holding onto a female. Both subjects appeared intoxicated and smelled of alcohol. The female had dirt and leaves on her back, according to the report indicating that she may have recently been on the ground.
The male continued to hold onto the female, despite officers asking them to separate. One officer attempted to pull the female away, but the male did not loosen his grip. The male subject released her when another officer grabbed his right arm and shoulder.
While the male was being pulled away from the female subject, he attempted to grab onto the officer who initially tried to pull the female away from him. After a brief skirmish the male was handcuffed.
The female said although the male hit or punched her, she did not want UNMPD to arrest him. She had several bruises on her face that did not appear to be fresh.
According to the report, the female refused medical attention, and officers allowed her to exit the area. The male was arrested, taken to the UNMPD station for processing and then to the Metropolitan Detention Center, where he was booked for battery against a household member.
