The animated TV series, “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” lands at Popejoy Hall as a two hour live orchestral performance, bringing the show’s musical score on stage for the show’s 20th anniversary tour.
The orchestra, which plays in Albuquerque on Sunday, Nov. 2, will be paired with highlights and favorite moments from all three seasons of the show, projected on a full-sized cinema screen, according to a Popejoy press release.
The live orchestra performs the music of Emmy Award-winning composer Jeremy Zuckerman, who is behind the show's original music, and will be in sync with the action on screen, according to the press release.
Heidi Joosten, the orchestra’s associate conductor and Jeff Award-winning music director, said she worked in musical theater until she transferred over into conducting live-to-picture events including the “Spider-Man into the Spider-verse” tour.
“We were really lucky that a lot of the original creators were on board to help create this concert,” Joosten said. “So we have a bunch of movements that are all complete musical thoughts that they super cut the visuals to fit.”
Honored with a Peabody Award and Primetime Emmy, the animated Nickelodeon production is on Netflix with three seasons and 61 episodes. The orchestra performance will run for two hours and include moments from all three seasons of the show.
“What an incredible piece of television,” Joosten said. “The subject matters that they tackle with (show) such incredible sensitivity but also making sure that you understand the difference between right and wrong. It's such a good piece of art that also transcends generations.”
Albuquerque is the fourth stop on the concert’s international tour.
“I am just so excited to be coming to Albuquerque to bring this show there, and I hope everybody comes out and has a great time with us,” Joosten said.
