UNM releases updated app for campus safety

On July 31, the University of New Mexico retired Lobo Guardian, the University’s previous safety alert notification system, in favor of a new app called UNM SAFE.  A collaborative effort between the Office of the President, the Dean of Students, Campus Safety, UNM Police Department and Information Technologies, UNM SAFE offers a broader variety of safety resources for students on campus, according to the app’s website. UNM SAFE provides a mobile BlueLight on the device, reducing the need to search for a physical call station on campus in the event of an emergency, a feature not offered by Lobo Guardian.

Campus dorm shooter sentenced to 12 years in prison

The shooter that claimed the life of 14-year-old Michael Lamotte and injured another at a University of New Mexico dormitory last year was officially sentenced last week.  John Fuentes, now 19 years old, was sentenced to 12 years behind bars after taking a plea deal on Aug. 25 in court, during which he pleaded no contest to second degree murder and aggravated battery. The plea agreement includes five years probation when Fuentes is released from prison. Prosecutors said that on July 25, 2025, Fuentes and Lamotte were with two other friends, Daniel Archuelta and Zion Miera — who is Lamotte’s half brother — inside a Casas del Rio dorm room. Fuentes was the first person involved in the case to be sentenced, according to KOAT.

Women's Basketball: Coach Amy Eagan is already making the Land of Enchantment feel like home

This year, Amy Eagan is heading into her first season as head coach of the women’s basketball team at the University of New Mexico. Eagan grew up in northeast Missouri, where she was one of five kids, and was a three-sport athlete in high school, juggling basketball, track and softball.  She attended Truman State to play basketball, where she was a four-time conference standout, starting in 98 out of the 100 games she played. Eagan is the career record holder in both steals and assists, while also holding the Bulldogs’ single-game point record of 46.
