OPINION: Bobbleheads of the week

There are winners and there are losers. Not every loser is the same, as these players' performances were key in costing their teams this week. These players are favorabily known as bobbleheads.

“You’ll get 'em next time” is a phrase these pro sports players definitely had to hear after some terrible performances this week. Here are the players whose play this week earned them the title of bobblehead.

New Orleans Saints: quarterback Spencer Rattler

It is a foregone conclusion that the New Orleans Saints are struggling, having the worst record in the NFC this NFL season at 1-7. However, the team is not completely at fault for their week eight loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as the defense only gave up 212 total yards, 23 points and forced a single turnover.

So in walks Rattler, who had two crucial mistakes on the day. The Saints took the opening kickoff down the field, and Rattler fumbled the ball in Buccaneers territory. Then after a goal line stand by the defense in the second quarter, Rattler threw a pick-six. A moment he likely wished to forget as Rattler was run over by Buccaneers linebacker Anthony Nelson.

Rattler was ultimately benched in the third quarter for rookie quarterback Tyler Shough, with the game ending with a final score of 23-3 in favor of the Buccaneers. Rattler will serve as the backup for at least a week as the Saints announced Shough will start next week against the Los Angeles Rams.

New York Knicks: center Karl-Anthony Towns

The New York Knicks were coming off their first loss of the season, looked to rebound, but their star center Towns did not perform.

To his credit, Towns had 12 rebounds, but finished with only eight points, shooting two of 12 from the field in their 121-111 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on the road.

The New York Knicks now 2-2, will start NBA Cup Group Play on Friday, Oct. 31 in Chicago, Illinois, versus the Chicago Bulls. There is a long way to go in the NBA Season, but the Knicks will need better output from Towns in order to turn it around.

New Jersey Devils: Goaltender Jacob Markström

The New Jersey Devils are off to a very good start this NHL season, starting with a record of 8-2, currently leading the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference.

However, when there’re highs, there are lows as well, demonstrated after an eight game winning streak snapped in an 8-4 loss in Colorado versus The Colorado Avalanche. The team offensively started slow, unable to gain their rhythm until the second period when the score was 5-0. They then made four back-to-back goals to make the game 5-4, but they did not score after that.

Markström had 34 saves out of 42, but eventually the dam broke too much.
