Isotopes vs Sugarland 1

Isotopes mascot, Orbit, has fun with the kids in the game against the Sugar Land Space Cowboys on Thursday, June 8 2023, at Isotopes Park.

Isotopes unveil new concessions ahead of opening day

A new year means new concessions for the Albuquerque Isotopes with five entrées and a dessert.

All of these concessions and more will be available to eat in time for the home opener on Tuesday, March 31 against the Reno Aces.

The Farm Team

Isotopes Executive Chef Jim Griego is bringing a new sandwich called “The Farm Team,” featuring layers of crispy fried chicken cutlet, roasted turkey and smokey duck bacon with brie spread, raspberry jam and lettuce served on an onion roll. Griego is a proud fan of legendary football coach and broadcaster John Madden, paying homage to Madden and his iconic dish, the turducken, he said.

“I’ve been trying to get a turducken here for years, but I thought people might freak out at the duck until I came across this delicious duck bacon. I really think people are going to like this one,” Griego said.

Hot Diggity Dog Popcorn

One consistent theme among these concessions is a new spin on a classic formula, clear with the “Hot Diggity Dog Popcorn,” a take on the beloved entertainment snack popcorn. The dish includes golden-fried hot dog slices tossed in sweet-and-spicy seasoning added to a classic bucket of popcorn.

Burger bowl

Once again, a classic food gets a fresh spin with the “Burger bowl,” one of the healthier items on this list. It’s exactly as advertised; a grilled hamburger patty chopped up and added to what is essentially a salad bowl with California salad mix, red onions, tomatoes, cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese and spicy avocado dressing.

The Hogfather Waffle

Griego’s personal favorite among the entrées is perhaps the most interesting one, “The Hogfather Waffle.” Belgium waffles and french fries serve as the base for the main attraction, the Isotopes’ signature pig candy, topped off by chocolate whipped cream and a mini waffle. The pig candy is deep-fried pork ends tossed in brown sugar, maple syrup and crushed red pepper.

“The pig candy and the whipped cream is just a flavor bomb waiting to happen and when I’m gone I hope the pig candy is my legacy,” Griego said.

Fiesta Nachos

The most straightforward of the new entrées is one of the tastiest. Tortilla chips, green chile nacho cheese, guacamole and salsa make for the Isotopes’ “Fiesta Nachos.” Like the others, there is a twist: six taquitos, three beef and three chicken, round out this plate of nachos.

Strawberry Shortcake

If you saved room for dessert after having one — or all — of these dishes then the “Strawberry Shortcake” is the newest sweet option. No twist here, just a tasty pound cake with strawberries and strawberry glaze topped off by soft serve ice cream and whipped cream.
