Coming off of a win against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, the New Mexico Lobos were back at home to take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs for the second game of the women’s soccer season Sunday afternoon. Gonzaga would go on to defeat the Lobos 3-1.
Neither side gave any leeway during the first half, with the score sitting at 0-0 at the break. That quickly changed when Gonzaga forward Samantha Snorksy scored in the 49th minute with an assist from midfielder Amelia Severn.
The Lobos managed to get their lone goal of the match when defender Fiona Jenkins scored the equalizer at the 59th minute. The goal was an uplifting moment for home fans, but not enough to stop the Bulldogs. Severn managed to notch her own goal in the 69th minute, followed by Snorsky’s second in the 80th.
The loss brings about the first loss for the Lobos and new Head Coach Karley Nelson.
According to Nelson, the team was trying out a new formation during the match.
“We’re learning a new formation right now that we just started. So just sticking to that formation, not giving up on that, and trusting the process,” Nelson said on how the team could improve. “If we continue doing that I think we can be very successful.”
The Lobos will be back at home this week, looking to improve their record while taking on the 1-2 Cal State Northridge Matadors on Sunday, Aug. 30th at 1:00 p.m.
