Dear Wooley,
Effective celebrity activists use their fame and fortune to bring attention to important issues and to give credibility to representatives of social movements. Internationally known celebrities can help expose and highlight problems that would normally get little or no news coverage without their involvement.
Ah, the chain letter, those things that nobody sees anymore in print form but that have become an irritating hassle with the advent of social networks. It seems some days I can’t log on without finding something in my feed about clicking the “like button” if I think starving children are bad or to share a link if I’m “weird and don’t care if anybody knows.”
Readers,
As the northern hemisphere tilts toward the sun, bringing long spring evenings replete with floral perfume and avian symphonies, it can be hard to remember that inside some people, it is lonely, dark and cold. This season of birth and renewal is paradoxically a time when more people choose to end their own lives. Recent events have brought this home to us at UNM.
Today marks the day each spring when our campus is scattered with eager and ambitious individuals seeking to increase awareness about the ASUNM election process. Many students hear the name, “Associated Students of the University of New Mexico,” and associate the offices, agencies and positions as simply part of an undergraduate political organization.
My name is Ashkii Hatathlie and I am a presidential candidate for ASUNM, and I am proud to be running with the slate Impact for UNM Student Government.
Despite the strong leadership of the current GPSA president and council, and despite a strong showing at the GPSA-ASUNM-sponsored rally for affordable education, students face a fee increase for the upcoming year.
Relocate for love only if the feeling is reciprocal
Needles, empty shooters and crushed malt liquor cans litter the sun-streaked hills and roads that lead to the Santuario de Chimayó, perhaps the most holy pilgrimage site in New Mexico.
A man I work for was told he would die in a month if he didn’t find another doctor to refill his morphine pump. He told me about it, and even though this was not exactly a death sentence, he took it very seriously.
As I have read through the UNM policies, procedures and guidance regarding activities and freedom of speech on UNM campus, I think first about what special nature a university has in contrast to private individuals, companies and government organizations.
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.”
A few days ago, I was using one of the College of Education’s bathrooms. Besides noticing that the male side is one of the worst designed bathrooms at UNM, I noticed that somebody had put a small tab in every single urinal that read something like, “Your teeth could be this color, the benefits of smoking,” all stark white.
Good parenting possible despite parentless past
I recently spoke with resident Daily Lobo cartoonist Juan Tabone for his take on the controversy surrounding his strip.
Readers,
I’m just going to come out and say it: football is the worst sport ever.
A flawed family is better than no family at all
