Sweet Weapon on tour in California

Local alternative band Sweet Weapons is going on tour this week through Arizona and California, having kicked things off in Albuquerque at the Gasworks Sunday night. “It’s like a short little run,” said drummer Jake Lang. “It’s just a week of mostly California shows.

Restaurant Review: Da Vinci delivers a pizza fine art

Da Vinci’s Gourmet Pizza sits in a converted gas station at the corner of Indian School and Girard. It may look small, but this joint delivers great big taste. John Mickey Jr., who moved his restaurant from the NE Heights four months ago, said he has seen business rise by 50 percent since the relocation, and the delivery side of his business is still growing.

Casual use of racial slurs provokes concern

“The first time I heard the word ‘nigger’ was when I came to America,” said Ashley Davis. Originally from Guatemala, Davis, a junior mechanical engineering major, said she feels uncomfortable in her classes because she is often the only, or one of very few, black students.

Lobos host Mozart play

Emotional arias and rich contraltos will be coming to UNM’s Keller Hall later this month, as the music department prepares to debut its production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” The production is comprised of more than 50 performers, several UNM departments and two directors: Leslie Umphrey and Sam Shepperson.

Program gives students a chance to teach abroad

Deborah Rifenbary, associate dean at the UNM College of Education Administration, has set up a one-month exchange program with an elementary school teacher in Austria. The program sends UNM students in the education program to teach students in Austria’s elementary and middle schools.

‘Plagues’ album is metal defined

Tampa-based metal band Iced Earth started 2014 off right when it released its 11th studio album, “Plagues of Babylon.” “Plagues” sees the band’s one consistent member, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist Jon Schaffer, lead the way on an uncompromising album embodied by tales of death, disease and a one-for-all attitude.
