Panelists dance to ethnic beat

by Margarita Ortega y G¢mez Daily Lobo Assimilating traditional and indigenous dance forms with European influence was one of many important culture issues presented at a dance conference Wednesday. A panel of dance educators, some from UNM, representing a variety of ethnic dance backgrounds discussed the issues affecting them on personal and social levels at the National Dance Education Organization conference.

Couple learns life lessons in 'Holy Land'

by Pamela Herrington Daily Lobo "The Holy Land," is an unlikely love story between an orthodox Jew and a Russian prostitute. The film is making its American debut Friday at Madstone Theaters. It was written and directed by Eitan Gorlin and made in Jerusalem during a four-year period when the area was relatively peaceful.

Balloonist tie-dyes the sky

by Sari Krosinsky Daily Lobo The sky is literally the limit for Jonathan Wolfe, an artist who makes his own hot air balloons. Wolfe's art is on display at Winning Coffee for the rest of October. The show includes a fascinating collection of photographs of one of his balloons, framed silk tapestries and vibrant fractal patterns.

Moore's genius on display at film center

Controversial filmmaker Michael Moore is making his way to Popejoy Hall Tuesday. In honor of his visit, "Bowling For Columbine," "Roger and Me" and "The Big One" will be showing at the Southwest Film Center this week. Moore's creative genius won him an Oscar in 2002 for "Bowling for Columbine.

Guitarist exhibits 'extreme' ability

by Kate Crofts Daily Lobo Rodney Branigan can play duets with himself. During his trademark "Schizophrenic Duet" Saturday, audience members shook their heads in disbelief and dropped their jaws to the ground. The 'duet' involves two acoustic guitars played solely by the talented Branigan.

'Bill' mixes style with action

by Michael Sanchez Daily Lobo "Kill Bill: Volume One" is Quentin Tarantino's hyper-kinetic, ultra-aware return to directing that accomplishes what it sets out to do - generate bloody mayhem. The plot is a loose one about a former assassin (Uma Thurman) who was attacked on her wedding day by fellow assassins and left for dead along with nine members of her wedding party.

Knife slices into Duke City

Shonen Knife is possibly the biggest and baddest Japanese punk-pop band of all time. The all-girl ensemble will be at the Launchpad tonight with The Mindy Set and the Roxiehearts. Shonen Knife is promoting the release of the English version of Heavy Songs - an album that is already a favorite overseas.

Teatro's 'Sue§o' seen in play's production

Love (noun): A deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude toward a person, such as that arising from kinship, recognition of attractive qualities or a sense of underlying oneness. See also: Something that can happen to anyone. "Stop Kiss," is a play about two average, heterosexual women who meet, form a friendship and eventually fall in love.

Magn°fico embraces hip-hop

Representations of hip-hop culture have made their way into the Magn°fico Artspace gallery in the show "Hip Hop: Portraits of an Urban Hymn." The show includes photographs taken by David Scheinbaum at a variety of hip-hop shows in the Sunshine Theatre and "Rain," a theatrical production by Prophet Productions.

Drag queen show reveals variety

October is National Coming Out Month and Sinatra-DeVine Productions is setting out the rainbow carpet for the fourth year in a row. The Company's annual production of "Come Out, Come Out Wherever You Are," a drag review and variety show, is taking place at the Hiland Theatre on Saturday.

Author exposes lies, reigning diva of right

Everyone lies. Some just lie more than others. Maybe those who tend to lie too much are politicians. Then perhaps those who help facilitate the lies are the media and political commentators. When this happens, it hurts the entire country. That's the main point of comedian Al Franken's best-selling new book, Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right.

Album gives listener time for a headache

'Blade' cuts a stylistic tale

The film "The Princess Blade" is a beautiful Japanese revenge tale. Opening Friday at Madstone Theaters, this movie is the story of a bleak future. In an isolated land, a corrupt monarchy struggles to retain power and a secret clan of assassins will kill anyone for a price.

Classic art on display

by Jessica Del Curto Daily Lobo The chance to see original works of art by painters like Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh or Matisse, may have been a rare opportunity for many New Mexicans - until now. Starting Oct. 5 and running through Jan. 4, a collection of 64 paintings from the Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow, Scotland, will be making a stop at the Albuquerque Museum.

Voice carries 'Up South'

Of the thousands of people in Albuquerque, only about 15 experienced the jazzy, brassy, eccentric, one-woman performance of "Up South" Friday night. Marya Errin Jones, the creator and actress of "Up South," frolicked and tumbled around a small stage strewn with newspapers and churned up a unique blend of absurdity, puppetry, radio theater, mask manipulation and singing.

Magician starving for British spotlight

LONDON - Poor David Blaine; after Michael Jackson created and accepted his own "Entertainer of the Galaxy" award at last year's "Video Music Awards," he had to go and totally discredit Blaine. "Your magic is real and I believe in you," Jackson said just before he got even weirder and dangled children out of hotel balconies.

Tricklock performance explores relationships

The Tricklock Company is celebrating its 10th year of production. Company members are focusing on the theme of milestones in honor of the anniversary and this is part of the reason they chose "Fool for Love.

by John D. Bess Daily Lobo "The School of Rock" is in session, and headmaster Jack Black is busting knuckles with his spaced-out, rubber-faced yardstick of comedic genius. People who are not familiar with Black really need to stop reading this article, call in sick, wrap their minds around their favorite substance and spend the day watching "Jesus' Son," "High Fidelity" and "Orange County.
