US military might keeps world powers in check

Editor, A former owner of an ice cream company is waging a campaign questioning the necessity of the Pentagon’s large-scale weapons systems, including the F-35 fighter-bomber, which has been plagued with problems yet to be resolved.

The Setonian
Opinion

Many corporations will self-destruct from misregulation

Editor, Cancerous regulation is required to maintain the pay of the overpaid. It’s funny to think that a hyper-efficient organization could value an entity over 100 times another, when the most complex system we know of — the human body — only allows about a times 10 multiplier for our brain.

Same-sex couples should learn about Social Security aid

Editor, When New Mexico legalized same-sex marriage, it also opened the door for married gay and lesbian couples to receive an array of federal retirement benefits. Married gay and lesbian couples are now entitled to apply for the same Social Security benefits that had been only available to heterosexual married couples.

Expanding into space requires human risks

Editor, A creeping sensation of inevitable failure follows every conversation about space. We’ve been to the moon. We’ve sent multiple complex systems to Mars. Obviously, we sent the wrong thing, because we’re not there. Every effort to establish a sustainable system outside our planet has failed.

The Setonian
Opinion

Peaceful resolution not considered after 9/11

Editor, It is said that unless we learn from it, history tends to repeat itself. The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans. In response, the Global War on Terror, with major battle fronts being fought in Afghanistan and Iraq, have caused 66,000 American casualties and a total of over $3.1 trillion in expenditures with no definitive success in sight.

Palestinians need the same freedom as SA

Editor, Nelson Mandela, perhaps the most iconic figure in the struggle against South African Apartheid, has died. It sometimes shocks me to remember that the Apartheid regime in South Africa continued to exist well into my lifetime, with U.S. government support provided to it for a good portion of that time period.

Garcia: I just want my privileges returned

Editor, With regard to the December 5 Lobo article, “Garcia Wants to Return to Campus” I would like to offer a few comments. First, the article contains an erroneous statement that I and others “managed” the website (Southwest Companions) and were involved in “running” it. This is absolutely false.

The Setonian
Opinion

Kirtland’s pollution ignored due to fear of defying power

Editor, The Kirtland Air Force Base jet fuel spill of 24 million gallons is the largest poisoning of underground water in the history of the United States. 24 million gallons is almost twice the size of the Exxon Valdez disaster. Read the powerful lead story in the Nov. 28 – Dec. 4 issue of the Weekly Alibi exposing this catastrophe.

The Setonian
Opinion

Hatred overpowered potential prosperity

Editor, In reply to the previous letters regarding the State of Israel and differing versions of history, I can only say this: The Jewish people accepted the desert; the Arabs refused the fertile land of honey.

The Setonian
Opinion

Historically, Arabs refused to compromise with Israel

Editor, Richard Forer’s letter published in Tuesday’s Daily Lobo, ”Glossing over history is bad, Israel never content,” is dumbed-down anti-Semitism at its best. And before anyone says the author is “Jewish,” what does that mean?

The Setonian
Opinion

Glossing over history is bad, Israel never content

Editor, Shlomo Karni’s recent letter published in Monday’s Daily Lobo, ‘History of the West Bank is worth recalling,” is a typical example of myth-making disguised as history. Its deceitful purpose is to deny documented history while sabotaging the Palestinian people’s struggle for self-determination.

Garcia says Lobo story is untrue, offers apology

Editor, On Nov. 6, the Daily Lobo ran a story (“Judge: Former UNM president granted access to seized property”) about my being granted access to property that APD had seized. There were a couple of errors in the story that I would like to correct. I would like to emphasize that I was never a partner or associate of Mr. Flory.

The Setonian
Opinion

We can wake up and change after bad deeds

Editor, On June 25, 1976, my grandparents in Illinois were murdered in their sleep. They were retired farmers in their 80s. Six years later, a young Anglo man named Dale was arrested and confessed. Months after that, I wrote him, offering my forgiveness. He wrote me back — profoundly repentant for his terrible crime.

Albuquerque elected to support its women

Editor, November 19 was the day I seemed to have been waiting for forever. I had been eagerly QDwaiting to vote against the “Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Ordinance” for months. Every day my Facebook page was filled with posts about the Respect ABQ Women Campaign and news about the upcoming election.

The Setonian
Opinion

Reader outraged over ACA, Obama’s lying

Editor, The Obama administration’s implementation of the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, has been a topic of several cartoons in recent issues of the Daily Lobo. As witty as these cartoons may be, they are not amusing.

The Setonian
Opinion

Academia holds power, incarceration is necessary

Editor, Very few people would argue that bad behavior always results from bad intent. So it is puzzling that in Friday’s Peer Review, Veena Patel claims that “The coupling of neuroscience and law allows us to update our ethical system to understand that bad behavior isn’t always bad intention.” The apparently unexamined aspect of this notion that an ethical code is in need of updating is a bit disconcerting, as is the implication that we all are in need of top-down enlightenment.

The Setonian
Opinion

Abortion activists have to respect UNM’s mission

Editor, I agree with Mac Morin’s well-written letter objecting to Bible cherry-picking in Tuesday’s Daily Lobo. However, as to his comment on consistency, I’m reminded of Charles Kettering’s famous quote: “Beware of logic; it is an organized way of going wrong with confidence.”

The Setonian
Opinion

Cherry picking arguments from the Bible is dishonest

Editor, The fallacious act of cherry-picking with regard to Old Testament scripture has become so frequent today that the average layperson becomes lost in a sea of “straw man” argumentation. Christians themselves have been guilty time and time again of cherry-picking various portions of the Bible in order to substantiate a claim.
