Guns don’t make moral judgments

Editor, After reading “Defend your rights on campus with AK-47” by James Burbank in last Friday’s Daily Lobo, all I can say is what a ridiculous letter that was. There is no substance to the letter at all, only hysterical ranting about how people may arbitrarily start shooting other people over a bad grade or their perception that someone is annoying. Obviously, the intent of the article was to criticize conservative politics and states that support the Second Amendment. Unfortunately, Mr. Burbank exhibits no reason and provides no facts or common sense to support his position.

Defend your rights on campus with an AK-47

Editor, Here’s one of the best ideas to come along in years. Naturally it came from that bastion of enlightenment Texas, the state that gave us George Bush, Rick Perry and the death penalty for most of its citizens.

Gardasil vaccine worse than the disease it’s for

Editor, In response to Sarah Coffey’s asinine letter in Thursday’s Daily Lobo regarding the Gardasil vaccination, I would like to take a moment to encourage everyone to run a Google search for how many young girls have died or experienced complications after receiving the vaccine. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has 68 deaths listed as of June 22 of this year; however, the CDC is notorious for claiming vaccines don’t cause any problems, so I’d take its reports with a grain of salt.

Candidates should check their facts

Editor, In Monday’s GOP primary debate, there were two statements regarding women’s health issues that were both incorrect and detrimental to society. First, the morning-after pill, also known as “Plan B,” is not the abortion pill.

US health care flawed, needs reform now

Editor, The 2011 Domenici Public Policy Conference, held on the NMSU campus in Las Cruces last week, brought together experts on America’s national debt, economic outlook, national and cyber security, science, technology and health care reform to discuss progress in these areas and what can be done to maintain America’s competitiveness on a global scale. Even though I work for a public policy organization, I attended the conference as one of 14 student representatives from UNM.

UNM Dems do it differently this year

Editor, I don’t know what you may think about political organizations, but I could guess that you are probably wrong — at least when it comes to UNM Democrats.

Online ratings promote laziness, student revenge

Editor, I have a couple of things I want to say in reference to Thursday’s front-page article, “Professors Rate RateMyProfessor.” The kinds of students who leave comments on RateMyProfessor.com probably fall into one or more of three categories: The first is the kind of student that I and all instructors dread: They don’t want to work, have a ridiculous sense of entitlement and throw hissy fits when they don’t get their way.

US funds murderers to feed oil addiction

Editor, I compliment and I thank many the Jews of conscience in the United States and in Israel who have spoken out loud and clear — publicly damning the Israeli government’s brutal oppression and mass murder of Palestinians.

New signs benefit peds and pedalers

Editor, Kudos to the University for installing signs around campus to remind bikers, in the most cordial words, to respect pedestrians and to share the roads.

Protest against ROTC was not against military

Editor, Regarding Wednesday’s piece on ROTC recruitment on campus, I feel that the article greatly overlooked the more specific reason behind the protest of ROTC recruitment and that the piece quickly turned in to a 360 word advertisement for the ROTC program. Therefore it seems necessary to put the counter argument forward here.

PATS: not a for-profit vender for University

Dear Editor, I am writing in response to a letter to the Editor that appeared in Wednesday’s edition of the Daily Lobo regarding UNM Parking and Transportation Services (PATS). The writer refers to PATS as “an independent, non-University profit vendor.” That is incorrect.

One unanswered question for mankind

Editor, As I see it, there is only one question left unanswered for our species, and that question is this: Is it possible for us human beings to mature (grow up) enough that we no longer blame something we refer to as ‘god’ for what are natural occurrences on this planet —

Syria stands on edge of civil war

Editor, Peaceful protests have been taking place in Syria against the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad since Jan. In a manner not too different from the civil rights movement of the 1960s, Syrians took to the streets to peacefully call for an overhaul of their corrupt and murderous government.

Trade a chicken for a parking space

Editor, I just want to applaud Friday’s cartoon about the UNM Parking Daleks. As a side note, I applaud The Daily Lobo for getting a cartoonist that addresses UNM issues, not more syndicated pap. These parking kiosks might be convenient for Parking and Transportation Services (an independent, non-University profit vendor) but they suck for us.

GOP principles can fix economy

Editor, It has become increasingly clear that the economy is stagnant. The White House has ceaselessly broken its promises. We were promised recovery and now we are in fear of a double-dip recession. The AAA credit rating has vanished.
