Professor’s protests may stress students

Editor, On Friday the Daily Lobo had an article about a professor of English, Dr. Peter Lundman, who protested the Mass on the Grass that was held at the Duck Pond. Lundman is trying to force his atheistic beliefs down the throats of anyone within the UNM and CNM areas.

Economic policy best if not led by profit, idealism

Editor, It has been a long while since I last wrote to the Daily Lobo. I had no intention of joining in this debate over capitalism because I dislike what the opinion section of the Lobo has become: an extension of petty comments from anonymous critics who, for some reason unbeknownst to me, have a particular affinity for caps lock and rabble-rousing. Now, after reading the ongoing thread between Damian and Jose, I felt compelled to enter into the discussion with a plea for reasonable discourse and proper reflection on the argument. I do not agree that “a return to capitalism” is what this country needs; indeed, I am perplexed by such a statement.

Restoring capitalism will benefit economy

Editor’s Note: This letter is response to Jose Flores’ letter printed in Wednesday’s Daily Lobo,“Economy steals from poor, gives to rich,” which decried the current American economic system. Editor, First off, we do not live in a true capitalist system.

Oil addiction leads to deceit over Libya

Editor, If anyone has ever been addicted to drugs, or knows someone who has been, then both parties know the addict develops a skill for lying. This deceit is used in many ways so that the junkies can get their fix.

Good journalism needs good quotes

Editor, “I heard s**t went down.” Luke Holmen, quoting a student who clearly hasn’t put any thought into his remarks ultimately loosens the overall effectiveness your article has.

Greeks do right without complaint

A reader at DailyLobo.com responded to last week’s letter, submitted by Lisa McBride: “List of Greeks’ positives could fill the Parthenon,” about the biased view of Greek life on UNM campus: by Barbara Vidal posted Monday “This is completely disgusting. I know tons of great, awesome, genuine people involved in Greek life who do amazing things for UNM and their respective houses, yet the difference [between] them and you, Lisa McBride, is that fact they are in Greek life because it fits into their lives and it calls to who they are; it is an important part of their lives and will continue to be one.

Norway terrorist didn’t hurt country’s freedom

Editor,   It’s nice to know that the government of Norway has decided to counter the horrendous terrorist acts perpetrated upon it with “more democracy” instead of doing what America did, which is the exact opposite. Following 9/11, this country’s leaders passed the Orwellian, unconstitutional PATRIOT Act in October 2001, apparently deciding that restricting the rights of its citizens was the best solution to prevent future terrorist threats.

A new Pledge of Allegiance to suit these unjust times

Editor, A revision of the Pledge of Allegiance: I pledge allegiance to the Segregated States of America, and to the reputation of politicians for which greed and no ethics of restrictions stands, one nation, under financial debt, without a concern for those less fortunate, that is dividing us all.

Politicians primed to destroy house Founding Fathers built

Editor, It must be comforting to American citizens to know that so many of today’s politicians follow in the Founding Fathers’ footsteps by supporting low or no taxes for the wealthy and corporations and high taxes for the middle class and poor.

UNM’s reproductive health clinic is professional, cautious

Editor, The UNM Center for Reproductive Health provides comprehensive obstetric and gynecologic health services for New Mexico women, and it does so in a safe and supportive environment. The clinic is staffed by UNM physicians who are nationally recognized medical experts.

Islam and Democracy don’t belong in the same breath

Editor, With so many quarters cheering at the top of their lungs for the so-called “Arab Spring,” one has to wonder if the concepts of Islam and Democracy are compatible. The definition of Islam is “Submission to the will of God;” the definition of democracy is “a political system in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who can elect people to represent them.” Let us examine the question of supreme authority in both systems. In Islam the ultimate authority to legislate laws comes from Allah as revealed in the Quran and the way, or Sunnah, of the Prophet Muhammad.
