UNM runner earns spot in NCAA Championships

Staff Report In his first 10,000-meter race of the season, Jeremy Johnson secured his spot at the 2008 NCAA Track and Field Championships. Johnson hit an automatic qualifying time of 28:33.08 late Sunday at Stanford's Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational. He was named Mountain West Conference Track Athlete of the Week on Monday, along with Colorado State's Drew Morano.

Gaps in U.S.-Mexico fence favor rich, well-connected

Editor, I heard in the news media about the national security fence that will separate the U.S. from Mexico. If this fence is supposed to be for the good of our country, why haven't we started building one across our northern border to separate us from Canada? After all, what's good for the goose should be good for the gander.

Student Chris Flynn has spent many late nights working on his designs at the School of Architecture and Planning. Flynn sits behind a desk piled high with the papers, building plans and tools he needs for his assignments. As an architecture student, Flynn has 24-hour access to George Pearl Hall, and he needs it.

Welcome to another edition of "From the Sports Gutter." This week, the topic is the NBA Playoffs. Kobe Bryant was named NBA MVP as his Los Angeles Lakers have started 5-0 in the 2008 playoffs. That news might only fire up Chris Paul, who is already playing at an outstanding level.

Injured midfielder helpful on field, off

UNM soccer player Michael Reed regularly finds himself shin deep in buckets of ice and wrapped up from knee to hip. He said trainers and teammates make fun of him, but that's OK. Reed is just happy to be here. Reed, a sophomore, earned himself a starting position as a midfielder for the Lobos right out of high school but tore his meniscus before the 2006 season started.

Tribe: Heritage lost to mining (Video)

Big Mountain, an area near Black Mesa, Ariz., used to be a place of peace and tradition, but now the land is being destroyed by the Peabody Coal Company, said Allen Cooper, a former member of the Big Mountain Support Committee. Cooper said the Navajo land has no electricity or water, and the people there provide for themselves.

Police: Student had guns on campus

Boyar The UNM Police Department arrested student Kevin Boyar on Tuesday on charges of unlawfully carrying a gun onto a University establishment. Police said four guns were recovered from Boyar's parents' house, including an AK-47 assault-style rifle, and there is evidence he brought the weapons to his room in the Student Residence Center.

Students wonder why UNM didn't send emergency alerts

Students who lived in the Student Residence Center with Kevin Boyar wondered why they were not informed by the TextMe UNM system when their neighbor was arrested Tuesday. "I was just walking to go eat at La Posada, and all these security guards surrounded all of us and started screaming at us to get behind a car," student Kaela Barber said.

Acquaintances: Boyar was either 'positive' or 'crazy'

Some students who know Kevin Boyar said he was mild-mannered and sweet. But others said he was irritable and had a bad temper. Kaethe Richter, who went to high school with Boyar, said he was a "very positive person" who enjoyed participating in sports. Richter said he was an athletic trainer at Eldorado High School, was on the swim team and enjoyed spending time with his mother.

Student arrested for having guns on campus

The UNM Police Department arrested student Kevin Boyar, 19, for unlawfully carrying guns on campus Tuesday. Chief Kathy Guimond said UNMPD received an anonymous tip that Boyar had guns in his room at the Student Residence Center. No guns were recovered from Boyar's dorm, but Guimond said officers found evidence that weapons had been in the room.

Alumnus prevails over tumor

UNM alumnus Russell Bonn Jr. had to shelve his dreams after a baseball-sized tumor was discovered in his brain six years ago. The operation left him unable to keep his job, but that hasn't stopped him from pursuing success in a different field. Bonn graduated from UNM in 1986 with a bachelor's in mechanical engineering and went to work as an engineer for Rockwell Industry.

Lisa Gillim: One day, I went to an elementary school, and I saw lots of kids, and I knew that's just what I wanted to do. DL: You're not worried that it might stress you out some? Investigation finds fire caused crash (AP) - An engine compartment fire triggered by a ruptured oil line caused a small airplane to crash-land in northern New Mexico, killing the pilot and his wife, federal investigators say. Glenn Elliott, 75, a retired Sandia National Laboratories engineer, and his wife, Laurie McKnight, 75, a retired teacher, were killed last Aug.

Farmers are dealing with an unconscientious govt.

Editor, This letter is in response to the numerous articles concerning the U.S. Farm Bill. The bill currently being considered by Congress is a multi-billion dollar farm-subsidy bill renewed every five years. It is a continuation of the 2002 farm bill. The bill first became law in 1933 as a means of preventing farmers from taking a loss on their annual production of crops, including corn, wheat, cotton, rice and soy beans.

Jazz Infidels get funky with punk improvisations

The Jazz Infidels got their name after a month of debate. "It was something we could all semi-agree on," saxophone player Sam Isabel said. "'Infidel' has a connotation that you don't follow the norm. Plus, we wanted to indicate that we are a jazz band." The band also includes Der Baron on drums, Vince Spiak on stand-up bass, Boleszek Osinski on trumpet, and Shawn Umsteau or Paul Mallory on piano.

Band grooves on genre-juggling

At one time, the Felonious Groove Foundation had nine members. "We would go to a show, and it'd look like a clown posse getting out of the car," guitarist Cali Soberanes said. "The van door would open up, and it'd be a nonstop line of musicians getting out.
