City has strong market for art, culture

Albuquerque has a stronger market for arts and culture than most major cities in the U.S. In fact, it's about equal to Los Angeles, said Christopher Mead, dean of UNM's College of Fine Arts. UNM's Bureau of Business and Economic Research published a report in August that looks at the economic impact arts and cultural industries have on Albuquerque and Bernalillo County.

Yeo said her character in "Laughing Wild" isn't as crazy as she seems. "She just wants someone to listen to her, to accept her, to love her," she said.

What-ifs & tuna fish

In "Laughing Wild," two lonely souls find love - in the tuna fish aisle. The play's two characters, referred to only as Man (played by Blake Catherwood) and Woman (Heather Yeo), reflect on their high-anxiety urban lives in monologues and bizarre, coinciding dream sequences.

Aramark rips off students and treats workers poorly

Editor, There have been multiple letters in the Daily Lobo concerning Aramark's contract here at UNM. Robert-Paul LeMay, Chris Cuellar, Amanda Skotchdopole and David Martinez have all stated the same facts: Students do not have to eat Aramark food, or it's not that bad.

U.S. must get with times in providing sex education

Editor, All Daily Lobo readers should be shocked and appalled at the results of a devastating study showing that one in four teenage girls have a sexually transmitted disease, which has been making headlines lately. This is an outrage, not because so many children at younger ages are having sex in this country, but it's an outrage that so many children are so profoundly ignorant about sex and its potential consequences.

The humor in alternative energy

The first piece in Christine Chin's exhibit is powered by a fuel tank of liquefied worms. The exhibit, "Alternative Alternative Energy," has five pieces that represent their own micro energy economy because they power themselves, Chin said. The exhibit will be up through April 4 in the Jonson Gallery.

Band defines 'punchy ambience'

For the past six months, the Fertile Crescent has been on the injured list. "We couldn't play for four whole months because our drummer overextended his wrists from playing too much," vocalist Bryce Hample said. The Fertile Crescent will perform at Winning Coffee Co.

Good health policy means creating smoke-free zones

Editor, I am writing in response to the article on banning smoking published in the Daily Lobo on Feb. 27. I feel the headline writer missed the point by focusing only on the negative aspects with the headline, "Campaign to ban smoking loses spark," saying it all.

Iraq War debate can't be based on false premises

Editor, It is well-proven that decisions made from a faulty premise are frequently flawed. The purpose of discussion and debate is to flush out errors and decide, based upon fact, what is the best action to take. If our military is accomplishing its objectives in Iraq and they are worthy, then why retreat? If the opposite is true, fix the flaws or leave.

Body exhibit protesters reliant on logical fallacy

Editor, I acknowledge and admire the extreme amount of hard work, dedication and academic aptitude it takes to earn a very distinguished position as a medical student, for I have been through these hardships with my older sister and her work in the dental hygiene program.

Surviving Spring Break: Alcohol

Spring break gives students a little rest between midterms and the second half of the semester. But for some, the five-day vacation is an excuse for alcohol abuse, said Jill Anne Yeagley, director of Campus Office of Substance Abuse Prevention. "A lot of students already know how to have fun and unwind without alcohol as well as with," she said.

False claims easy to make when facts are not in order

Editor, Fascism is an easy word to throw around when someone does not like what he or she hears and does not want to take the time to research the matter. Gregory Evans' letter published in the Daily Lobo on Friday regarding the protest against the human bodies exhibit was ironic in that regard.

Culture

'10,000 B.C.' a historical failure

Saber-toothed tigers notwithstanding, the anachronisms in "10,000 B.C." completely ruin the movie. If Roland Emmerich had put even the slightest amount of research into the time period he was making a movie about, he would have realized that, first of all, no one was building pyramids 12,000 years ago.
