Students should not settle for gross, unhealthy food

Editor, Eat on campus? No thanks. Since last semester, I have been reading in the Daily Lobo about the controversy over food on campus. The article in Monday's edition on the renewal of the contract of UNM's food service provider, Aramark, made me sick to my stomach.

Bush and his allies should win the 'Savage War Prize'

Editor, We live in dire straits. The average American must feel sorry and pity the nation. Today, not even the most stubborn patriot can muscle up enough impertinence to claim against all odds that we live in formidable times. Too many illusions have been destroyed during George Bush's illegitimate and criminal presidency.

University unveils diversity plan

UNM has long advocated the need for diversity on campus, but it's time to turn words into action, said Rita Martinez-Purson, interim vice president of institutional diversity. "We need to walk our talk in terms of diversity," she said. "What we're looking at is not every aspect of diversity, but what actions need to be taken to advance social equity and inclusion to promote a healthy campus climate.

The Daily Lobo Spotlight asks useless questions

Editor, I read the UNM Daily Lobo Spotlight in Tuesday's edition and I realized how irrelevant the whole thing is. The questions directed to the students are basic and so are the curt replies. For example, Paul Baker was asked, "Where are you from?" The reply was simply, "I'm from Texas.

Daily Lobo hasn't covered Aramark issue thoroughly

Editor, The media has the responsibility of framing a message after taking into account all sides of an issue. The coverage pertaining to the current food-service provider is no exception. There are issues with the food being provided in the SUB and other dining options.

Lobos fall in final seconds of overtime to No. 25 Cougars

The UNM men's basketball team let No. 25 BYU slip through its fingers 70-69 in overtime Tuesday at The Pit. Letting BYU off the hook in the closing seconds of the game is going to sting for a while, Lobo forward J.R. Giddens said. "When you have a tough game like this that you lose, it's going to hurt," he said.

Move toward vegan dining reflects nationwide shifts

Editor, In response to the article titled "On-campus food selection has support of some students" published in the Daily Lobo on Monday, it was encouraging to read Shara Marron's acknowledgement that the University needs to expand the availability of vegetarian and vegan dishes in order to meet student demand.

Forum to address racial slur

Josef Powdrell remembers what it was like growing up in segregated West Texas hearing the N-word tossed around lightly. "As a child, I was called the word by people who ran grocery stores, people who ran movies, people who shopped at stores," he said. "Now you have a generation that wants to take a word that endears negativity, inferiority, servitude and tries to turn it into a positive.

No one should be barred from right to self-defense

Editor, In response to the letter by Melanie Unruh published in the Daily Lobo on Wednesday in which she argues against carrying guns on campus, I offer the following for the consideration of readers. First, to carry a concealed firearm on campus is against the law.

Campaign to ban smoking loses spark

The campaign to ban smoking at UNM has had trouble picking up steam. In the fall, the Coalition for a UNM Smoke-Free Campus conducted a survey asking students if they wanted to ban smoking on Main Campus. Only 154 students took the survey, and about 52 percent of them wanted to ban smoking on campus.

Poor shooting plagues Lobos in loss

The UNM men's basketball team's heartbreaking 70-69 loss to BYU on Tuesday will be remembered for the Cougars snatching the win in the final seconds. But as disappointing as the sequence was, the game was lost for the Lobos during regulation. UNM entered the game leading the nation in 3-point accuracy, but was just 3-of-21 on Tuesday.

UNM must continue to fund its sustainability program

Editor, As a young organic farmer in Albuquerque's South Valley, I am impressed with the strong leadership that UNM's Sustainability Studies Program has demonstrated with regard to healthy, sustainable and local food. Three of this program's numerous accomplishments are organizing the first-ever farmers' market on campus, supporting the development of Dragon Farm at South Valley Academy charter high school and initiating a statewide alliance of diverse stakeholders to cut greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture and create a carbon-neutral local food shed.

Closing US military bases wouldn't end war for good

Editor, I mostly agree with William Bolt's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Thursday in support of Rep. Ron Paul for president. To be honest, I like Paul a lot, and if not for his stance on the military, he might have my vote. However, closing all foreign military bases is a very bad idea.
