ASUNM opens temporary office

ASUNM senators will set up a makeshift office at Dane Smith Hall this week. The temporary change of office is to make senators more accessible to students, said Matt Barnes, vice president of the Associated Students of UNM. "The reason we're going to do that is because we had a town hall meeting last semester, and in that meeting, a lot of student groups said that they would like to see ASUNM reach out in different ways," he said.

Giddens' top performance keeps fans on their feet

J.R. Giddens had the best game of his career Saturday, and it was the best individual performance fans at The Pit have seen in some time. Perhaps the most impressive thing about the senior guard's performance was that he was unselfish and didn't disrupt the team game, UNM head coach Steve Alford said.

Lobo adjusts skillfully to U.S. competition

From Eastern Europe to the New Mexico desert, sophomore Sandra Zmak has made the transition with flying colors. Last season, Zmak posted a 22-11 record in singles and earned All-Mountain West Conference honors in singles and doubles as a freshman. "This biggest change for me, coming from Croatia, was the change in court surface," Zmak said.

Stringing together music, history and craft

The violin is a piece of New Mexican history brought to the state by Franciscan priests. And for years, the art of violin making and playing flourished in the state. "In New Mexico, we used to have a tremendous tradition of violin making," said Peter White, professor of American Studies at UNM.

Once Clinton is elected, U.S. will be an oligarchy

Editor, Let me start by stating that whoever is elected in November will be better than President Bush. Then again, that isn't much, as it's virtually impossible to do any worse. While I am glad a lot of young people are participating in this year's sham election, I am saddened that this youthful enthusiasm will soon be crushed when Sen.

Curbing population growth won't cure global warming

Editor, I am writing in response to the letter by Leslie Stoeckle published in the Daily Lobo on Wednesday. The letter was about global warming and how the population needs to be curbed to support efforts in decreasing the effects of global warming. I feel this would be a major mistake for several reasons.

Guest Column: Stem cell bill could save lives

by John Ryan Daily Lobo guest columnist The New Mexico Senate again passed legislation that I introduced that would permit embryonic stem cell research at the UNM Health Sciences Center. Using those embryos in research that otherwise would be discarded could help find a cure to Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and many other diseases and spinal cord injuries.

The last time the UNM men's basketball team took on Wyoming, it took 99 points and an overtime for the Lobos to come out with a win. And the way UNM head coach Steve Alford sees it, the Cowboys are clicking even more on offense. "They're a lot better," he said.

UNM scores 22 players

Incentives for motorcyclists would ease parking misery

Editor, UNM Parking & Transportation Services seems to treat even the parking problem as a market to exploit. I see the parking department is collaborating with a private firm to rent cars on campus. This is not the direction to go. For instance, rather than charging $60 a semester to park a motorcycle on campus, the University should pay students to drive motorcycles to campus and not a car.

'Cyrano de Bergerac' gets a little cosmetic surgery

Albuquerque Little Theatre is updating a 17th-century French play. "The music from that era is pretty dull," said Theresa Reid, director of "Cyrano de Bergerac." "I'm just not into harpsichord. I'm not into opera. Back in 17th-century France, they were just starting to experiment with opera, and it wasn't that impressive, so I did my sound design around my young cast.

Belief in God causes most perversions and atrocities

Editor, There's no point in trying to shield our children from sex. They're going to learn about it whether we like it or not. So, why not take charge and at least give them a little guidance? Children who are given negative messages and burdened with guilt about their sexual feelings are the ones most likely to turn into pedophiles or sexual cranks.
