UNM's offense struggles at home

It was just a couple years ago that the UNM women's basketball team was unstoppable at home, especially against conference opponents. In fact, the 2005-06 senior class dominated the Mountain West Conference, not losing a single conference game in their four years as Lobo basketball players.

Editor, I refuse to buy, sell, grow or use marijuana. I have never bought, sold or grown it in my life. About 30 years ago, I took some tokes of marijuana that was offered to me. Marijuana benefits certain health problems, but other natural and legal remedies exist for all those conditions.

Santa Fe 'safe havens' help violence victims SANTA FE - Some Santa Fe businesses are joining in the fight against domestic and sexual violence by displaying decals that identify them as "safe havens" for victims. The decal lets victims know that the staff inside is trained to assist people who have been assaulted or raped by helping them access appropriate community resources.

GPSA votes to not hold recall election for Garcia

GPSA representatives voted Saturday not to hold a special election to recall their president. But some members of the Graduate and Professional Student Association say that violated the organization's constitution. In November, council members drafted a petition to recall Joseph Garcia, and 284 graduate students signed it.

Tennis falls in fight against Boise State

The No. 54 UNM men's tennis team experienced déjÖ vu Friday. The Lobos lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to No. 22 Boise State at home. The loss comes less than a week after falling 4-3 to the Broncos in the finals of the Mountain Regional Playoffs on Jan. 19 in Boise, Idaho.

No. 7 Wildcats shut out Lobos

The No. 67 UNM women's tennis team was steam-rolled by No. 7 Northwestern. The Wildcats blanked the Lobos 7-0 Saturday at the UNM Tennis Complex. "They were a great team," head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz said. "In doubles, I knew right from then that they had such big serves and such hard, powerful groundstrokes, this was probably the best team we've ever faced.

Staff Report: Men's soccer

Former UNM goalkeeper Mike Graczyk will get the chance to shut down professional offenses. Graczyk - one of the most successful Lobos in program history - was drafted in Thursday's MLS Supplemental Draft by the Colorado Rapids. He was the 19th overall pick, taken by Colorado in the second round.

Council chairwoman resigns

GPSA's council chairwoman resigned at Saturday's meeting. Melanie Armstrong's resignation was read before the Graduate and Professional Student Association. Armstrong oversaw the council's meetings. She collaborated with the executive board over the agenda for each meeting, deciding the amount of time spent on each item, and delegated who was able speak and for how long.

Editor, The ASUNM Lobby Committee participates annually in the New Mexico legislative session by lobbying for initiatives that affect students of the University. Goals for this session include the maintenance of low tuition by supporting a zero to minimal increase in the tuition credit, as well as doubling the current amount of state work-study funding.

Police find burned body on west mesa The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department has identified a burned body found on a dirt road on a mesa west of Albuquerque as that of Danny Michael Baca, 53, whose home was near Chilili. Baca's body was found Jan. 11. Authorities said he'd been shot.

Toppert: UNM's long-range weapon

Chad Toppert knows his team has faith in his shooting ability - being the most accurate 3-point shooter in UNM history will have that effect. Toppert said he enjoys his role on the UNM basketball team. "I definitely think my teammates have confidence in me, and they know I'm capable of making shots at any time," he said.

Host of 'Reading Rainbow' to kick off Black History Month

February is Black History Month, but festivities begin on campus this weekend with a brunch and speech featuring LeVar Burton. Burton, who hosts the show "Reading Rainbow," was selected to speak because of his accomplishments as an actor and a role model, said Finnie Coleman, director of African-American studies.

Tennis braces for top-10 team

The No. 67 UNM women's tennis team is gearing up for a battle against No. 7 Northwestern this weekend. The matchup is the first time the Lobos will host a top-10 team. Head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz said the team is excited for the contest. "I think the team realizes that this is a great opportunity for us," she said.

Showcasing the art of striptease

The Pez dispensers on display at the Kimo Theater won't make it into children's hands anytime soon. To get a piece of candy, Pez eaters push back the enormous wooden breasts of a burlesque dancer. The dispensers, customized by folk artist Steve White, are just an example of the artwork showcased at "Burlesque," an exhibit at the Kimo Theater.

Jan. 3 A male patient at UNM Mental Health Center assaulted a female health care worker in his room. A witness said the woman tried to give the man his medication, but the man refused and became angry. He punched her on the right side of her head. The woman's right eyebrow was bruised and swollen.
