Daily Lobo asks you:

Ben Willow Senior Music I just try to catch up on my sleep and then study as much as I can. I try to not get too drowsy. Kaleen Thompson Senior Biology I try to study as much as I can and not work. Susan Kugelmann Senior Art studio I go over my notes and make note cards. That's about ...

Senior uses speed, not height, to win

Every time the UNM basketball team finds itself on a fast break, senior guard Jamaal Smith is always a part of it. Whether he starts it or ends it, he's always there. Smith is the Lobos' fastest player this season and has been a huge part of the team's 7-0 start.

ICES: Putting teachers to the test

Over the next couple weeks, students will fill in bubbles on Scantron sheets for all their classes, but they're not just tests. ICES evaluations play a key role in whether professors get promotions and receive tenure, Deputy Provost Richard Holder said.

When it comes to recycling, aluminum cans and cardboard are not the only materials that can be spared from the landfill, the manager of UNM's recycling program said. An event Saturday will collect electronic equipment to be recycled including computers, microwaves, televisions, irons, cell phones and toasters, Linda McCormick said.

Auction benefits art program

UNM's silent graduate art auction speaks volumes about community support of the University art program. The Graduate Art Association is holding its annual silent art auction at the Harwood Art Center, at 1114 7th Street N.W., from 6 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 1.

Web sites make it simple to help feed the hungry

Editor, You've seen them on television or in real life. Bone-thin with pained expressions. Victims of a socioeconomic disease known as world hunger. If you're like me, you've always wanted to do something to help, especially at this time of year, somehow.

Group promotes racism by excluding white students

Editor, I was extremely disappointed to see an ad in the Daily Lobo for a meeting hosted by Peer Mentoring for Graduate Students of Color on Tuesday. I was even more disappointed in the topic "Are We Minorities?" for a critical roundtable. In today's world of ethnic and racial sensitivity, it is hard to believe that a state-funded university tolerates an organization that openly limits itself to persons of color.

Members of GPSA to present petition to recall president

The president of GPSA is expecting Saturday's meeting to be heated as members of the organization plan to present a petition for his recall. "It's going to be a contentious situation," Joseph Garcia said. "The allegations are unfounded. I think it's a personal vendetta."

Staff Report Members of an anti-war group dressed as clowns and demonstrated near a National Guard booth in front of the SUB on Wednesday. "The National Guard should not be here," said Ethan Ganuer, a member Carnival Insurgente de Albuquerque. "We hope to persuade students not to join the National Guard.

University should tear down ugly, impractical buildings

Editor, We have serious problems with two of the structures on Main Campus - Ortega Hall and the Humanities Building, also known as Onate Hall. For starters, they're hideous. Blocky, rough masses of concrete that try to capture some of the pueblo-revival style UNM is known for, yet lack all the grace and dignity of Zimmerman Library just across the plaza.

Exhibiting a sense of touch

A well-known proverb posits a picture is worth a thousand words. So, is a word and its myriad meanings likewise worth a thousand pictures? A new exhibit at the UNM Art Museum, "Touch and Be Touched by Photography," explores that question.

GPSA president works for the people, not for power

Editor, Somehow, there's the idea that "good Americans" become silent, obedient followers so America can lead. That by looking inside and not outside, going to our little gerbil-wheel jobs on the ant farm, at the university and in the lab, we somehow put our best foot forward, outside.

UNM to sell locally grown food

Locally grown, organic produce is coming to UNM. "There is support for locally grown food on both ends of campus," said Carol Scott, operations manager for UNM Food Services. "So, starting in the spring semester, we will also offer organic, local choices at the Marketplace in the SUB."

Candidates should run by their stance, not their race

Editor, I'm writing in response to a statement made by Mayor Martin Chavez concerning Rep. Tom Udall, which was published in The New York Times. In the article, Chavez refers to Udall as being the "fair-haired boy" of Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, and Sen.

Play rocks lyrics of the '80s

In Tricklock Company's latest pet project, a young woman is cursed to speak in the lyrics of four female rock stars: Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett, Debbie Harry and Pat Benatar. Director Summer Olson said the idea for "Belladonna" evolved from a solo project into an ensemble production.
