Key to healthy campus starts with tobacco ban

Editor, As the flagship university in New Mexico, everyone at UNM needs to think about setting a healthy example. If UNM wants to be the healthiest campus in the state, it must remove tobacco and deadly second-hand smoke. Tobacco causes cancers of the lung and other parts of the body and causes heart disease in smokers and nonsmokers.

Vehicles on campus pose threat to disabled students

Editor, I had the opportunity to comment on the dangerous bicycle, skateboard, motor scooter and motorcycle situation at UNM over the air Thursday on KUNM. These vehicles, prohibited by UNM policy in pedestrian areas, pose a enhanced threat to students with disabilities.

University should offer healthy food on campus

Editor, I am writing about UNM's food offerings. I conducted research on what foods were offered in the main food venues on UNM's main campus. The survey was conducted during the summer, so two food venues in the SUB were closed, and I couldn't read the full menus of Kabuki and Casita.

Fast-food not an argument against a ban on smoking

Editor, Reading Monday's editorial regarding smoking on campus left me wondering if the Daily Lobo staff was trying to be sarcastic. It's not that the editorial was ridiculous in itself; it's simply that the article was highly redundant of the last two years of debates on smoking on campus.

UNM should get creative to promote recycling bins

Editor, I feel it is important that recycling become second nature for students, staff, faculty and community members who spend time on our beautiful campus. Unfortunately, I've been woefully disappointed at the lack of attention recycling gets on campus.

There is no just reason to ban smoking on campus

Editor, Is outdoor second-hand tobacco smoke a real health concern? I believe the Faculty Senate needs to update its "Smoke-Free Campus Proposal" of April to include some evidence more conclusive than just the Surgeon General's Warning that outdoor second-hand smoke is a noteworthy health concern for nonsmokers.
