Report discrimination to equal opportunities office

Editor, There have been many articles in the Daily Lobo recently regarding civil rights issues that have affected the UNM community. Some of these incidents have involved possible criminal activity and are being investigated by law-enforcement personnel.

Free speech threatened at UNM and other campuses

Editor, It has been quite a week already for those who hate the First Amendment and free speech on college campuses around the country - from stopping the displaying of a flag raised in front of Scholes Hall to silencing too many questions concerning government leaders at a public forum at the University of Florida.

Flag ceremony addresses intolerance

About 75 people attended a ceremony Thursday to raise the Mexican flag and address issues of intolerance at UNM. The ceremony was held because a student took down a Mexican flag from a flagpole outside Scholes Hall on Monday, tore it and took it to the Air Force ROTC office.

ROTC: Flag incident stems from miscommunication

Editor, As part of the UNM community, the ROTC departments share responsibility for raising and lowering flags at Scholes Hall. This month, it is the Army ROTC department's turn in the rotation. On Friday morning, Army ROTC students raised the U.S. flag and the New Mexico state flag.

Mexican flag shouldn't fly without U.S. flag present

Editor, While it is unfortunate that the individual cited in the story published in the Daily Lobo on Wednesday tore a flag, in proper journalism the background should have been explored. If there was no U.S. flag flying in the vicinity, the Mexican flag should not have been allowed to be hoisted and, depending on etiquette, position and simultaneous raising may have been appropriate.

Editor, Just recently, two friends and I were about to lift weights at Johnson Gym between classes when suddenly we were booted out because a class was in session. I understand that there are weight-lifting classes, but it's not like we were interrupting a lecture or study session.

America should embrace, not single out, differences

Editor, This is in response to Daniel Martinez's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday. I am an atheist and heterosexual supporter of gay rights. With that said, I was completely dumbfounded by the gratuitous amounts of drivel in the entirety of the letter.

Diversity office is ideal for handling hate crimes

Editor, Due to the recent articles and letters published in the Daily Lobo regarding our stance on the Hate Crimes Task Force recommendations, I would like to offer some clarification on the opinion rendered on behalf of the Staff Council. Judicial affairs specialist from the Dean of Students Office Robert Burford presented the report to the full council on Feb.

Argument against calcium requires more evidence

Editor, In reference to John Wagner's reply published in the Daily Lobo on Wednesday to Dr. Peggy Spencer's column regarding the use of vitamins, we once again see the guise of selective pseudoscience used to support one's worldview. While one can only surmise that Wagner is purporting a vegan diet, he wants to use an article from Nutrition in 1989 to show that calcium supplements are bad for women.
