Narrow interpretations of Bible lead to bigotry

Editor, I was reading the letter by Daniel Martinez published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday on whether homosexuals deserve fair and equal treatment. I want to thank Martinez for giving us this perfect interpretation of an ancient book that is supposed to dictate every single aspect of our lives.

Religion causes problems; gay people aren't to blame

Editor, There is so much wrong in Daniel Martinez's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday, it's hard to figure out where to start. First of all, I would like to know what God you worship, Martinez, because he is one cruel mother. Your God seems to be incredibly hateful and irrational, too.

UNM will not tolerate acts of racism or xenophobia

Editor, We wish to respond to the recent incident involving the desecration of the Mexican national flag that was raised Friday on the south side of Scholes Hall. The incident is still being investigated, but what we do know at this point is that after a ceremony celebrating the Mexican independence day - Dieciseis de Septiembre - the flag that was raised during the celebration was subsequently taken down and, as we understand it, ripped to shreds.

Bible not obsolete, offers timeline of human history

Editor, I want to respond to letters by William Byatt and Brandon Curtis published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday. To call the best-selling book of all time contradictory is to be accusing God Almighty of being contradictory, since he inspired it. Byatt mentioned that it contradicts itself on the topic of eating meat.

Editorial: More bureaucracy won't stop campus hate crimes

The recent surge of racially charged crimes in the UNM community is bad news for the University. This month alone, three disturbing developments have given UNM a poor reputation that its public relations staff may have a hard time undoing. The first involved the harassment of Miss Indian UNM at a football game.

Bible not a reliable source for making public policy

Editor, I have read several articles and letters regarding the Bible and the issue of homosexuality. First, religion is created by human beings. For example, Warren Jeffs presided over a splinter group of Mormonism that still believes in the covenant of plural marriage.

Science, religion don't have to be in opposition

Editor, This letter is in response to David Martinez's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Friday. It was my good fortune to be touring the UNM campus, and I was lucky enough to have read Martinez's piece of zealotry. I must say that I applaud the general sentiment.

Gay people don't deserve fair and equal treatment

Editor, In response to several liberal opinions on homosexuality, I take a different approach. Many supporters point to the notion that couples who engage in homosexual relationships are consenting, loving couples. The supporters contend that discrimination against this group is on the same level as discrimination during the Civil Rights era.
