Daily Lobo headline doesn't accurately represent article

Editor, Tuesday's very misleading front-page headline in the Daily Lobo did not come close to accurately representing the actual content of the article. "Hate crimes office gets thumbs down" conveys the inaccurate idea that UNM as a whole squarely rejected the tolerance education initiative.

Bible too dated to prove homosexuality is wrong

Editor, This letter is in response to Jason Brown's paradoxical letter published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday. The very definition of a bigot is one who strongly opposes the views of others based not on reason but on frivolous things such as creed, race or uneducated opinion.

Professors rely too much on one-sided textbooks

Editor, I am generally in support of the idea that professors choose their own textbooks and that any book will have the agenda of the author in mind. But recently, I have encountered a situation where the books professors choose are so one-sided that rather than feeling like I'm learning about the subject I'm paying to learn, I end up listening to the soap-box ramblings of someone I'm not allowed to disagree with.

Student government needs to focus on local issues

Editor, I have been against the Iraq War from the start. I think it's a disaster that's been horrifically mismanaged and was executed with disgusting dishonesty, and I'd like nothing better than for it to be over. Despite my great disdain for the war, though, I was dismayed to learn that GPSA had passed a resolution calling on Congress to demand immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

Jason Zuffranieri Graduate student Statistics The graduate students are looking out for the students' best interests, and certainly, we can disagree over Iraq. All eyes on the MIND

Imagine a simple device that can be placed on your head to help you remember things faster. It sounds like something out of a science-fiction movie, but researchers at the MIND Institute, a nonprofit research institute on North Campus, are taking steps to make it a reality.

GPSA should be applauded for tackling global issues

Editor, As a former participant in student government, I must applaud the efforts of the GPSA on its resolution that calls for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. Too often, student governments are forced to limit their perspective. A high school student government is lucky if it is allowed to decide the homecoming carnival colors.

Building off last year's success

The UNM swimming and diving team is looking to build off of last year's performance. The Lobos finished seventh at the Mountain West Conference Championships and recorded a 6-6 dual-meet record in 2006.

Center can benefit from your garage

Staff report The Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice is beating the odds by keeping its doors open, a volunteer for the center said. "One of the things with the center is that it is a miracle that it keeps going," Frances Daniels-Thompson said. "Most organizations get grants from the government or major donors, and we just don't have that.

Editorial: Student government has no place in foreign policy

GPSA crossed a line when it passed a resolution Saturday demanding the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. The resolution will be sent to President Bush, all members of the New Mexico congressional delegation and the Board of Regents. It is reminiscent of a situation in the spring, when members of ASUNM tried to pass a resolution for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles, who faced charges in Venezuela for the deaths of more than 70 people.

UNM politics puts students 2nd

by Richard M. Berthold Daily Lobo columnist I recently did something I expect few others have: I read President David Schmidly's "A New President's Vision," his set of goals for the University. Such documents, which are apparently designed to demonstrate that the University has that vision thing, are regularly issued by UNM presidents and regents and, apart from creating new administrative structures, rarely result in anything.

Vitamin supplements no substitute for healthy diet

Editor, A few points raised in Dr. Peggy Spencer's well-intentioned column in Wednesday's Daily Lobo deserve to be elaborated on. Reference is made to a standard American diet that is unlikely to lead to vitamin deficiencies, but at the same time, because some people have exceptionally poor diets, supplementation is recommended.

Daily Lobo owes apology to gay students at UNM

Editor, With the national discourse regarding Sen. Larry Craig's public humiliation - over a guilty plea related to solicitation of an undercover police officer in a public restroom - it's unfortunate that the Daily Lobo chose to respond with the sensational rather than through a measured and objective approach.
