Event educates on sexual assault

Sexual assault comes in many forms. "When you think about sexual assault, you think about rape," said Natahnee Winder, a peer educator at UNM's Student Health Center. "Stalking, domestic violence and unwanted contact are also issues." Winder organized an information booth for National Sexual Assault Awareness Day on Wednesday.

Teaching young artists old tricks

Lithography was in danger of becoming an archaic medium 50 years ago. So June Wayne, who dropped out of high school at 15 to pursue art, got a Ford Foundation grant and started the Tamarind Institute in 1960 in Los Angeles. In 1970, the institute moved to Albuquerque.

Atheism isn't oppressive toward theist religions

Editor, I am writing in response to a student Suzanne Midani, who said in Tuesday's cover story that religions should stick together despite their differences because they all face oppression from atheists, in regard to Judaism, Christianity and Islam believing in the same God.

Electrician Geno Brown installs a wall sconce in the Communication and Journalism Building on Wednesday. The building's renovation is scheduled for completion around mid-May.

A long wait finally to end

It has been a long wait for the renovation of the Communication and Journalism Building, but the chairman of the department said it will be worth it when it's done around mid-May.

Bush sends mixed messages

by Mario Hernandez Daily Lobo columnist In a trip that started Friday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is traveling throughout the Middle East, meeting with political leaders. Although most countries on the list wouldn't raise much of an eyebrow, one country - Syria - caught the attention of not only the Bush administration, but also the mass media.

Group aims to make service a requirement

If a group of UNM students gets its way, community service classes will be required to graduate. "If you're coming in as an undergraduate, just like you have to take English 101 and history 101, you would have to take a class that has a service approach to learning," said student Travis McKenzie, a member of the Service Action Network, a student group aimed at increasing community service from UNM students.

Iglesias pulled through dirt for being disloyal to Bush

Editor, I find it disgusting seeing honorable public servants like David Iglesias swift-boated by hawks like columnist Scott Darnell. U.S. attorneys are political appointees, but their oath requires them to preserve, protect and defend the U.S. Constitution.

Being a liberal elitist has numerous perks, benefits

Editor, I would just like to communicate a missive to Aaron X. - for extreme - Lenard, on the subject of his letter on Wednesday. I notice he mentioned "liberal elites" and "social elites" in his letter, referring to Joachim Oberst and company. As a liberal, I of course include myself in their ranks, and so I'll say this: Don't dis liberal elitism until you've tried it.

U.S. must take a hard line against Israel's occupation

Editor, The media is ordinarily full of what seems to be justification for Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian territory, which apparently is institutionalized terrorism, as in terrorism on a national level. It's good to be reminded by letters like the one by Vicki Johnson on Tuesday that Hisham Jabi's presentation in the SUB on March 24 was to inform people of what Palestinians are experiencing.

Liberals should check facts against multiple sources

Editor, After reading lecturer Joachim Oberst's letter in Friday's Daily Lobo, it has come to my attention that people like him should not be entitled to an opinion, as their intelligence is in question. It is high time Oberst and the other left-wing elites get something through their horrendously thick skulls: President Bush's election was not illegitimate.

Men's basketball head coach Steve Alford answers a question at a press conference at the Rudy Davalos Center on Tuesday.

Spotlight's nothing new for men's coach

Steve Alford has had more than his share of attention since being hired as the head coach of the men's basketball team. Due in part to his $975,000 annual salary, Alford's hiring has been one of the most analyzed topics in Albuquerque. Fans have criticized and praised UNM for its decision to hire the former Iowa coach.

UNM should put emphasis on education, not sports

Editor, It is amusing how often people like to use the term "free market" without really knowing what they are talking about. Recognizing a supply-and-demand curve does not qualify alumnus Rudy Chavez as an economist, and if he were trained as one, he would understand the theory he used in his argument is meant for a for-profit venture.

Lobos can't hang with Isotopes

For two innings, the UNM baseball team hung with the Albuquerque Isotopes. Unfortunately for the Lobos, they couldn't hold on to a 2-1 lead and fell 7-2 on Tuesday at Isotopes Park in an exhibition game. UNM head coach Rich Alday said there were some positives to take from the loss to the Triple-A Isotopes.

Justice and impartiality are key to peace in Gaza

Editor, Rachel Fredman's description of the situation in Gaza and the West Bank in Monday's Daily Lobo is riddled with distortions. Although she claims Gaza has been under the "sole jurisdiction" of the Palestinian Authority since Israel's withdrawal in 2005, she takes no account of the fact that Israel controls all of Gaza's borders, including those with Israel itself, as well as its border with Egypt and its Mediterranean coastline.
