Lobos will have to change gears to defeat Wyoming

LAS VEGAS - The UNM women's basketball team excelled in dealing with speed and pressure in Wednesday's 80-52 pummeling of UNLV. Unfortunately for the No. 3-seeded Lobos, it's back to the drawing board for Friday's semifinal matchup of the Mountain West Conference Tournament with No. 2-seeded Wyoming.

Bill for new polling center fails

ASUNM voted in favor of a bill Wednesday aimed at increasing voter turnout for its elections, but it didn't pass because four senators weren't at the meeting. The bill proposed to open a polling center in a hallway of Mesa Vista Hall near the ethnic student centers. Nine senators voted in favor of the bill, six senators opposed it and one abstained.

Waters finally calm for UNM

LAS VEGAS - The Lobos' last game went a lot like their season - initially promising, but ultimately disappointing. While there were some highlights this year - an 11-2 start, a 13-6 record at The Pit - the season ended with a free fall for the UNM men's basketball team.

Editorial: U.S. attorney controversy mocks our Constitution

Of the three branches of government, the U.S. Constitution sets aside one - the judicial branch - to be free of politics. Federal attorneys are supposed to be selected and retained because of their skills, not their political leanings. This impartiality is the cornerstone of the American legal system, the principle that sustains our government over time.

Reporter misrepresented core of language society

Editor, I was a participant in the recent World Language Expo, and I was also present at the table representing the Philological Society at UNM. First of all, I feel that your reporter was misrepresenting herself by not announcing that she was with the Daily Lobo before she started asking questions.

Homosexuality defied by our reproductive nature

Editor, In my introductory biology class at UNM, a professor often described the union between a man and a woman as a lock and key. He used this analogy to highlight the complementary nature of man and woman. As the right key fits perfectly in the lock it was made for, so too do man and woman fit perfectly together.

Katrina relief volunteers fatigued on a daily basis

Editor, Deluge, flood of rain, tornado - these words evoke a sense of hopelessness and hope at the same time in the city of New Orleans at the beginning of 2007, almost two years since the hurricane season became a nightmare for thousands of citizens. Some lost their lives because of bureaucratic incompetence, and others because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

LAS VEGAS - Hannah Zavecz and Megan McGuffey had their way with the UNM women's basketball team's defense today, scoring more than 20 points each. Unfortunately for the two Wyoming players, the Lobos shutdown everyone else, as the rest of the Cowgirls combined for just 10 points.

ASUNM candidates should focus on affordable books

Editor, ASUNM elections are approaching, and candidates will become more active on campus to seem involved and appealing. I have a suggestion for candidates looking to reach out: Campaign to make textbooks affordable. The average student pays about $400 a semester on textbooks, which is about one month's rent.

Human beings should use their natural resources

Editor, Jump on board the environmental locomotive if you will not accept any sort of dissenting arguments to global warming. Movie stars, sports figures, politicians and thousands alike are joining the new sacrificial faith. They tell us that we can avoid Armageddon if we follow them blindly.

If you're staying at home over the break, rent movies that will take you places

The myth is that lots of college students have the time and money to fly thousands of miles for spring break. In reality, a lot of us are going to be stuck in our substandard student housing, scrounging change with friends for a six-pack of Pabst that will fall oh-so-short of starting that "Animal House"-esque party we've always dreamed of. No one will take their shirts off for us, and the beach will remain a distant dream.

Guard Amy Beggin goes for a layup after a breakaway during Wednesday's game against No. 6-seeded UNLV in the quarterfinal round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament in Las Vegas. The no. 3-seeded Lobos won 80-52 and will face No. 2-seeded Wyoming on

MOVING ON UP

The Lobos still had a bitter taste in their mouths after last week's 70-59 loss to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. So this time, they weren't going to let another second-half lead slip away. The No. 3-seeded UNM women's basketball team sprinted out to a 21-point lead and never looked back in an 80-52 thrashing of the No. 6-seeded Runnin' Rebels on Wednesday in Las Vegas. The win sets up a semifinal matchup for the Lobos on Friday with the Wyoming Cowgirls, who beat San Diego State on Wednesday in the opening round game of the Mountain West Conference Tournament. Guard Katie Montgomery said the Lobos didn't forget the last meeting with the Rebels.

Women's Day will stress importance of education

Workshop targets test anxiety

With midterms and test anxiety in the air, the College Enrichment and Outreach Programs uses the Adam Sandler movie "Billy Madison" to teach students how to study more effectively. The program is sponsoring a test-taking workshop today from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Mitchell Hall Room 102. "Test-taking skills is not exactly the most exciting topic," said Ricardo Romero, senior student program adviser. "What we try to do is incorporate that to make it a little more interesting for students."
