UNM needs brand, image to aid in long-term growth

Editor, In response to the editorial in Tuesday's Daily Lobo, I would like to emphasize a few key issues. It is important to remember that many nonprofit organizations, of which the University is one, run like businesses but with specific civic or philanthropic goals.

Writing, dreaming earn poet top award

Poet Lisa Gill has traveled down some weird roads. Europe, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, dreams and an innate knack for writing led the graduate student to win one of the nation's top awards for poets - a $20,000 fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

There's no defining Crazy Fool

Although Crazy Fool is now a vital part of Albuquerque's reggae scene, it came from humble beginnings. "I had the pleasure of being stuck in the dorms with this guy named Matt Fitch when I came to school in 1999," said Ben "Brightest Sol" Williams, lead singer and songwriter of the band. "We were roommates really out of fate. We started out jamming in the Santa Ana dorms."

Obama may have the spotlight, but McCain has guts

Scott Darnell will be writing a series of columns pertaining to the political power players in the world, the United States and New Mexico today. His column will focus on the decisions they make. It's a triple dose in this column, as he tackles the good, the bad and the gutsy moves of Sen. Barack Obama, New Mexico Speaker Ben Lujan and Sen. John McCain.

The first nurse to earn a Ph.D. at UNM's nursing school said the reality of her accomplishment is still sinking in. Students at technology's forefront

Students are often more technologically savvy than the people they are learning from, said Daniel Reed, director of the Renaissance Computing Institute at the University of North Carolina. "What I found talking to students at Carolina is they are much more in tune with technology futures than are often the professors and the staff and the leaders of the institution, because they see those trends early on," Reed said. "That's the place where you actually find what's going to take off."

UNM should help fund organization's mission

Editor, I spend a lot of my time in the Lobo Lair of the SUB. The only people that spend more time there than my friends and I are the students working with NMPIRG. Every day, they have meetings with people from all over campus. They carry their table and banner out to go to talk to UNM students about important issues that they are working on, and they don't leave their office until 9 or 10 p.

Editorial: Regents run University like business, not school

As the University searches for a president and a replacement for regent Sandra Begay-Campbell, we should be thinking about what is best for the future of UNM and who will take us there. Running the University as if it were a business seems to be the regents' top priority.

International community can help prevent violence

Editor, It is becoming increasingly likely that some form of breakup will occur to the nation-state of Iraq. The breakup will reflect the relationships among Iraq's Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish groups, and the relationships of these groups to the central government - which in turn have consequences on the region.

PIRG encourages students to be responsible citizens

Editor, I'm writing in response to the Daily Lobo article on Monday, "Students aim to start campus PIRG chapter." It seems to me that an organization that registers students to vote, helps inform them and then gets them out to the polls on Election Day is helping UNM students become responsible citizens.

Column: Skilled leaders needed in Iraq

On Jan. 10, President Bush announced his new strategy for the war in Iraq. His plan calls for more troops in the area. Unfortunately, the use of more troops will have little effect on the war. Only more bodies will be added to the death toll. Instead of adding more troops, Bush should find more competent leaders for the forces already in Iraq.
