The first time Steven Chavez saw a Mexican marimba was in 1980. Now, the experienced folk musician owns 33 marimbas from around the world and different eras. Letter: Nude photos degrading, regardless of intent

This is in response to Lucinda Ulrich's complaint about the dismissal of art teacher Tamara Hoover in the June 29-July 5 Daily Lobo. I found something in her column to be somewhat ambiguous. She claims that Hoover's nude pictures were "artistic, not pornographic." By what standards is anyone able to make this distinction? What's the difference?

Column: A star without drugs

If Albert Pujols didn't get hurt earlier this season, maybe baseball fans would really have something to celebrate. Coming into 2006, the most overanalyzed and annoying storyline was Barry Bonds trying to catch Babe Ruth for second place on the all-time home run list. The most frustrating thing about that fiasco was that television stations kept interrupting shows for every single one of Bonds' at-bats.

The Lobo Threesome

by Debra Au Daily Lobo The Vincent Black Shadow Fears in the Water Available July 11 After listening to the Vincent Black Shadow's Fears in the Water, I've become a new-found fan of not only the band, but the genre of ska as a whole. Despite some rather morbid cover art - a lone toy rubber ducky floating in a tub of jet black liquid - the album is fun and really upbeat.

Letter: House votes itself a raise, denies federal wage hike

On June 20, despite record-low approval ratings, House lawmakers voted themselves a $3,300 pay raise that will increase their salaries to $168,500 in the same week the Senate defeated a proposal to raise the federal minimum wage in increments from $5.15 to $7.25. This is absolutely the height of obscenity, and I, for one, am appalled and disgusted. If there is one issue that could and should start a revolution, this is it.

Fourth wave of ska on its way

Danny Winn and the Earthlings thought they would play in the Warped Tour - they were wrong. "Too bad we didn't get that," said saxophonist John DuBois. "There were no ska bands on there." Winn said the tour probably wants to give more exposure to other local bands and is why they won't be playing this year. "When we started, we were the only ska band in Albuquerque. Now there about seven," he said.

Library reopens after fire

The reopening of Zimmerman Library on Monday brought a smile to the face of UNM student Rose Ebaugh. She'd been struggling to find places to use computers for the past two months, until the first floor of the library was opened after an April 30 fire torched the basement and damaged thousands of square feet of property.

Working for their future

Jessica Van Why, a UNM accounting major, thought she botched her interview for an internship at Intel. "I totally thought I blew the interview, because they asked me some tech-related questions," she said. "I don't really have any background in technology. I don't even know what I said."

Letter: Not banning aspartame would be harmful to all

Concerning the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Board's decision on whether to move forward with banning aspartame, the artificial sweetener, "Delay and deflect" should not be the modus operandi in this matter. So many lives are at stake, and my intent as petitioner is only to prevent further neurodegenerative and carcinogenic damage, as well as the inevitable behavior problems, learning disabilities and birth defects resulting from corporations gratuitously and unnecessarily adding a chemical metabolized as formaldehyde and methanol to 6,000 food products and more than 500 children's medications.

Column: Teacher's nude art not naughty

I am appalled by the recent decision to dismiss Austin, Texas, art teacher Tamara Hoover after she posed for artful nude photos. Being a teacher today is hard enough without a person's personal life coming under attack every time he or she turns around.
