Letter: Scholarships compensate for increasing tuition costs

UNM isn't the only New Mexican university to increase tuition - New Mexico State University, New Mexico Tech, Eastern New Mexico University and Western New Mexico University also increased their tuition rates. Even Albuquerque's Technical Vocational Institute raised tuition.

Man arrested after being stuck in vent

A man was arrested Thursday after he jumped into a vent above Ho Ho Chinese Food and was stuck for about two hours. Albuquerque Police officers could not identify the man and did not know if he was injured from being lodged in a vent above the ovens in the restaurant's kitchen.

Top sprinter following in dad's footsteps

Sophomore sprinter Jarrin Solomon, the team's fastest 400-meter runner, has some pretty big spikes to fill. Solomon's father, Michael, won the 1977 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 600-yard dash for UNM. He also competed at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal as well as the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

City Council approves minimum wage hike

Albuquerque city councilors voted 6-3 Thursday to raise the minimum wage in the city. Mayor Martin Ch†vez has until April 30 to sign or veto the bill. He has promised to sign a bill that raises the minimum wage above the federally mandated $5.15 per hour within four months.

Reel Big Fish is bait for Fiestas

When Reel Big Fish first formed, members didn't know what ska was. "At the time, a lot of the bands in the area were ska bands, like No Doubt and Sublime," said Dan Regan, trombonist for Reel Big Fish. "We didn't even know what it was called. We knew we liked it, but we didn't know what it was."

Group fights for smoke-free UNM

Within the next few years, UNM could be completely smoke-free. The Coalition for a UNM Smoke-Free Campus is petitioning to ban smoking everywhere on campus, including outside.
