Letter: Patrick Henry fought for liberty, not for empire

It was 231 years ago today that Patrick Henry said, "Give me liberty, or give me death." Most Americans know him as a passionate defender of liberty, but did you know he was anti-empire? The title of his speech, "Should Empire or Liberty Be Sought?" gives you a clue.

Letter: Body image articles should focus on managing vanity

I am writing regarding Jessica Del Curto's series of articles on body image in the Daily Lobo the week before Spring Break. It would seem that the theme she's advocating was one of stasis - each installment continuously cast a bad light on anyone who went out and changed the way they looked.

Spike Lee's film thrills the hardest of critics

I credit myself on being pretty hard to impress when it comes to plot twists. Once you've seen as many action/suspense/thriller/crime movies as I have, you can see 98 percent of the standard, oh-so-shocking "Gasp - the mole is, in fact, Bruce Willis' boss" variety endings from the theater lobby.

Hamlet goes to high school

Shakespeare is fine and dandy. But making fun of Shakespeare is divine. "Hamlet the Vampire Slayer," written by Jason Witter and Aaron Frale, is a parody of the Shakespeare classic that combines the original storyline of Hamlet with elements from the television show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

Letter: City councilors shouldn't ignore public comments

I attended my first City Council meeting on March 6. I was eager to see government in action and all those other naive ideas. While I'm sure that the City Council is responsible for many good things, I was appalled to witness firsthand evidence of the chief complaint of most people regarding government - namely, that it is completely out of touch with the people that it is supposed to represent.

UNM gains millions in state funds

UNM fared well during the legislative session, said Carlos Romero, associate vice president for Government and Community Relations at UNM. UNM received about $200 million from the Legislature, which adjourned March 8.

Debate team preps for nationals

After six years of hardly competing, the UNM Speech and Debate team is participating in national tournaments again. The team placed second at the Novice Nationals in Georgia on March 10.
