Letter: Bias against student shows UNM hires unqualified staff

Editor, Earlier this semester I wrote a letter about the lack of credentials and education in the employees of Student Affairs, and John Bauer's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo frighteningly affirms that there are employees at UNM who have no business in the field of educating young minds.

Eclectic album a lyrical mosaic

by Daniel V. Garcia Daily Lobo There comes a time in everyone's musical mood when they get a hankering for Bob Dylan-esque lyrical landscapes Ö la "Subterranean Homesick Blues," whether he or she knows it. In the same vein, we all get a twinge of nostalgia for some punk-forerunner music, like MC5 - admit it, you do.

Letter: Corrupt politicians must face justice for war crimes

Editor, The president and vice president of the United States are responsible for their offices. I recently sent a letter to my only representative in the U.S. Congress, Heather Wilson, about the impeachment of George Bush and Richard Cheney for treason, war crimes and misdemeanors.

Students summon the dead in memory

by Aubrey Montoya Daily Lobo Student Isaac Casas grew up celebrating Dia de Los Muertos with his family. "We all went to the cemetery on that day and would feast there with loved ones," he said. "We put a little altar there for them." Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a celebration to remember the lives of loved ones who have passed away, Casas said.

Letter: Violence more offensive than preacher's words

Editor, It was once said that before one can truly know where one's enemies stand, one must first know where one is standing. In her letter to the editor in Monday's Daily Lobo, Katarina Garcia's commentary was outrageous, particularly for a college-educated person in 2005.

Letter: Eat chicken substitutes to stop bird flu's spread

Editor, Avian flu has been all over the news for a number of months now. The consensus seems to be that we are due to have a worldwide pandemic of the flu that will result in the death of millions of people. While H5N1 bird flu hasn't been found in the United States, in 2004 we had a number of confirmed cases of H5N2 bird flu in Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware and Texas, among other states.

Bizarre band has garage-rock feel

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo The prelude to Power Lloyd's new album instantly reminded me of the first pornographic film I stole from my father's oak dresser drawer. Trumpets politely squeal for 34 seconds and finally lay to rest when the voice of a '50s sports commentator says, "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the album.

Helping the poor fight for sight

by Eva Dameron Daily Lobo Almost a century ago, Helen Keller urged the Lions Club International to crusade against blindness and vision impairment. "She challenged them to become knights for the blind," said Curt Vavra, member of the Albuquerque Breakfast Lions Club.

Letter: UNM offers cash prizes in business plan contest

Editor, Life is about opportunities - one door closes and another opens. Our president, Louis Caldera, is committed to opening doors for each and every student at UNM, and we at the Anderson Schools of Management are doing our part. In partnership with other entities on campus, we are sponsoring a Universitywide business plan competition.

Letter: Lobos should boycott teams with racist mascots

Editor, A letter from 90 faculty and human rights organizations was recently sent to the presidents and athletic directors of NCAA Division I colleges and universities, urging them to adopt a policy to refrain from engaging in athletic competition with colleges and universities that maintain American-Indian imagery in their sports mascots.

Predator triumphs in costume contest

by Brandale Mills Daily Lobo Ghosts, goblins and monsters roamed through the UNM Bookstore on Monday for a Halloween costume contest. The first-place winner, David Jackson, was the Predator from the movie "Alien vs. Predator." The second-place winner, Satoshi Shimada, went as a samurai warrior, and the third-place winner called herself "The Shower Lady," which was a lady dressed like she was taking a shower.

Letter: Extremist Christians ruin teachings of Christianity

Editor, Lately, I hear more and more cases of extremist Christians offending the general public in attempts to "save" us. It is painful to hear about Christians being stereotyped as war-mongering, judgmental, self-righteous naysayers - especially by those who are extremists themselves.

'Saw' it once, seen it enough

by Ryan Skeels Rocky Mountain Collegian (Colorado State University) (U-WIRE) - The first movie I ever reviewed was the first "Saw," exactly one year ago this weekend. I had been looking forward to that flick for months upon months and when it finally came out, no terrible acting could stop me from deeming it the best movie I'd seen in years.

Letter: U.S. misguided in thinking terrorism can be fought

Editor, I would like to comment on letters this week regarding terrorism and its causes. I was waiting for some UNM history, political science or military instructor to speak up, but none have. First, terrorism is a tactic. You cannot declare war on a tactic.

N.M.'s most rockin' musicians on one CD

by Daniel V. Garcia Daily Lobo If you are suffering an existential crisis because you cannot decide what local band to see, fear not, Rock Outside the Box Vol. 2 has you covered. A couple of years ago, a compilation of different New Mexico bands was put together by Nate Smith, guitarist for Feels Like Sunday.

Letter: Social liberalism helps sustain public education

Editor, Social liberalism is sustaining and encouraging public education, rather than running amok as John Bauer states in Monday's Daily Lobo. His diatribe enthusiastically paints broad political canvasses with a few tiny brushstrokes and lambastes the privileged halls of academia while ignoring the poor and unfortunate.

Blood drive's 1st day draws 100 donors

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo UNM student Veronica Soliz tells her friends not to be afraid - it only hurts for two seconds. "Stubbing your toe hurts more," Soliz said. "Just try it." Soliz was one of 100 people who participated in the first day of a blood drive on Monday in the SUB Ballroom.

Wu-Tang freshens up old beats

by John Bear Daily Lobo Combine several of Wu-Tang Clan's more lyrically nimble members with the stars of hip-hop's indie underbelly, and you get Think Differently Music: Wu-Tang Meets the Indie Culture. I can speak for most hip-hop fans by saying nothing at all, opting to instead emit a low cooing noise accented with a fairly unattractive amount of drool sliding out the corners of my mouth.

Singer in tune with earth, God

by Eva Dameron Daily Lobo Singer Anna Wolfe grew up in a haunted farmhouse. "It was built by English settlers, and they had eight children," she said. "I don't know if they were the ghosts in the house, but that was the legend." She made a truce with the ghosts early on.
