College Republicans elect new leadership

by Christopher Sanchez Daily Lobo Officer elections for the College Republicans went smoothly Monday - for the most part. Phara Forsythe, former chairwoman of the College Republicans, requested UNM Police be present for the election because members Bob Cornelius and Justin Maier said they would filibuster the election if the voting procedures were not changed.

Letter: Extremists' actions don't represent Islam

Editor, In response to Tom Woodard's letter headlined, "Time has come for Muslims to unite against violence" in Tuesday's Daily Lobo: It is absurd to make the claim that the actions of the lunatic fringe of the Muslim world embody Islamic teachings. Such extremists or radicals are by definition not representative of the totality.

ASUNM approves fall budget

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo The ASUNM senate passed their fall operating budget, diving up a total of $41,172 to student groups on Oct. 12. The original amount requested by groups represented in the budget was $91,818. Mike Mooney, ASUNM vice president, said he has not heard any complaints so far from student groups.

Stew of cartoons spew foul jokes

by Abel Horwitz Daily Lobo The trick to watching Comedy Central's "Drawn Together" is that you have to be able to find humor in the fact that your childhood heroes are reduced to foul-mouthed morons. Entering its second season, "Drawn Together" asks the question, what would happen if you took eight cartoon stereotypes and put them together in the same house? The premise isn't much different from VH1's "Surreal Life," except its cast with cartoons instead of has-been celebrities.

Flogging a dead music genre

by John Bear Daily Lobo People have been saying this since 1977, but I think I can say it now with absolute conviction - punk rock is dead. So dead. Here are a few reasons why. First, Dead Kennedys are on tour as I write this - without Jello Biafra. That's kind of like the Doors performing without Jim Morrison.

Nail biters wanted for research

by Jason Kleymann Daily Lobo Evonne Maxwell has a solution for chronic nail biters - proper nail care. "When we're little, we are taught how to properly brush our teeth, but very few kids get taught how to properly take care of their nails," she said.

Taking minimal music to the limit

by Daniel V. Garcia Daily Lobo It can be said that ambient music is a genre in which silence and sparseness are as important as the notes themselves. Exemplary of this concept is Los Angeles' The Slow Signal Fade. The band's album, Through the Opaque Air, is typified by a reverberating guitar which sounds like it is being played under water and backed by a drummer who appears to have studied her flams and rolls intensively.

Athletes show mad skills

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo UNM men's basketball player J.R. Giddens made his debut at The Pit a memorable one Saturday during Lobo Howl. The annual event brings preseason entertainment for Lobo fans, with both the men's and women's teams competing in Cherry versus Silver scrimmages.

by Eva Dameron Daily Lobo Twenty-nine high school marching bands weathered the pouring rain Saturday for the 28th Zia Marching Band Fiesta. Marching bands from New Mexico, Colorado and Texas performed at University Stadium. "It's one of the largest regional marching band competitions in the Southwest," said Eric Rombach-Kendall, director of bands at UNM.

Fair's timing questionable

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Even though it was Fall Break, about 100 people turned out for the fourth Volunteer Fair at UNM. Lourdes McKenna helped organize the Oct. 13 event. McKenna said the biannual event, which is sponsored by the Provost's Committee for Staff, was meant to help UNM staff connect with volunteer groups.

Letter: Students should learn to live without Facebook

Editor, Isn't it interesting that the Daily Lobo had to do a cover story on Facebook.com being blocked through UNM connections? The fact that people are seriously complaining about this site being down is, frankly, a little scary. I suppose we will all need to revert to the old ways of communicating with fellow students in class by - oh, my - actually talking with them, getting their numbers, and, God forbid, getting their online messenger screen name.

Letter: CIRT's irrationality shows disrespect for students

Editor, The out-of-the-blue decision to unilaterally block Facebook.com as a first response to concerns about it without an open and transparent process is an inexcusable violation of basic respect for students at UNM. The few cryptic excuses given are illogical and fall apart under minor scrutiny.

Loss in overtime shocks soccer team

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Jeremy Fishbein has seen only one loss at home in his four years as head coach of the UNM men's soccer team. That's because he wasn't there Sunday for the Lobos' 3-2 overtime loss to the San Jose State University Spartans.

Defense fails to hold off UNLV

by Justin Goodrum Daily Lobo Don't let the 2-0 loss to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas on Sunday fool you. Assistant coach Jorge Vela said the UNM women's soccer team outplayed its competition at the UNM Soccer Complex. "I personally felt we were the better team.

Letter: Knockoff sites pose risk to security, not Facebook

Editor, The article in Wednesday's Daily Lobo headlined "CIRT blocks access to Facebook.com" reiterates the University's policy of doing whatever it wants and then making up reasons that have no grounding in reality. The reasons given for blocking the site are all founded on a false correlation between the UNM Facebook and the original Facebook or on untruths about unsolicited e-mail.

Making history despite losses

Staff Report The Lobo volleyball team was unable to get a whole lot going against a tough 16th-ranked BYU team Saturday. The Cougars swept all three games, solidifying their place as one of the top teams in the nation. It was the first time the Lobos had been shut out this season since Sept 3.

Letter: CIRT concerns unfounded; Facebook protects users

Editor, I read the Daily Lobo's article Wednesday about CIRT blocking access to Facebook.com from the UNM network. I would like to say that CIRT's argument against Facebook has to be the worst argument I've heard in a long while. CIRT worries that students who use Facebook are required to use their UNM net ID to register with Facebook, and additionally they express concern that this could lead to identity theft and stalking.
