Smoke from UNM station fills street

Firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from the water pump station on Redondo Drive near Yale Boulevard at about 5 p.m. Sunday. As smoke poured from the building's windows, three city fire trucks and a unit from the Albuquerque Hazardous Materials Response Team arrived on the scene.

What a difference a year makes. Last year, when the UNM women's basketball team gathered to watch the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, they sat nervously hoping they wouldn't be passed over. This season, having returned home with the MWC tournament title and automatic bid to the Big Dance in hand, their nails were safe - these Lobos knew they were in.

Skate Stopper

Narducci Daily Lobo The UNM Bookstore received a new addition this semester, black metal knobs, otherwise known as skatestoppers added to handrails that are meant to prevent personal injury and property damage. "We've had a number of injuries to people," said Robert Dunnington, campus safety manager.

Lobos' future looks bright

All season long, the Lobo men's basketball team has been hampered by some distinguishable factors. The Lobos have noticeably had lack of size, lack of depth and lack of scoring, all because of youth and inexperience. Despite those insufficiencies, they played with heart and intensity.

Lobos say farewell to '03 season

LAS VEGAS -- The Lobos ended a long and frustrating season with a 71-56 loss to BYU in the first round of the Mountain West Tournament Thursday in Las Vegas. UNM was the victim of a Cougar team that used 8-0 and 14-0 runs to turn a tight game into an easy victory.

Baseball continues win streak

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo The Lobos came out swinging against BYU Thursday, winning 19-14 in a game that saw their conference record improve to 4-0. Senior shortstop Dusty Young set the tone for the Lobos with his first at-bat, slamming a solo home run over the center field wall.

Quails influenced by grrl music genre

The Quails rocked the house on Tuesday night at the Launchpad -- in a very formulaic way. Early 1990s Seattle-area bands such as Bikini Kill, Le Tigre and the Breeders quite obviously heavily influence the trio from San Francisco. The Quails put a twist on the genre and, get ready for this, there's a man in the band.

University professor treks to Antarctica for research

Tabet Daily Lobo A research professor from the UNM Physics and Astronomy department is braving the harsh elements of Antarctica to research the effects of the sun on earth’s weather patterns. Stuart Jefferies, who is making his fifth trip to the country with a team of researchers, has several objectives including determining why the sun’s outer layers are hotter than its surface.

Student focus groups organized by library

To gather input, separate focus groups are being held for undergraduate and graduate students. Undergraduates are invited to attend a focus group on March 24.

Alumni art displayed at Masley exhibition

by Jacque Oldfield Daily Lobo UNM's Masley Art Gallery unveiled the Art Education Alumni Exhibit on Tuesday, March 11 featuring over 50 works by 35 different alumni artists. Masley Gallery Curator Melissa Bruce and Gallery Faculty Director Linney Wix assembled the collection and had the difficult job of selecting which pieces would be displayed in the scant 800 square foot gallery space.

Frontier owners given award

The Frontier Restaurant has been named Restaurant Neighbor of the Year by the New Mexico Restaurant Association. The award was recently presented to Larry and Dorothy Rainosek, the owners of both the Frontier and Golden Pride BBQ Chicken and Ribs Restaurants in Albuquerque, at the annual Hospitality Industry Awards.
