Editor, It is with sadness and regret that I learned about Professor Berthold's retirement. I was attending classes on the old GI Bill and I was fortunate enough to be his student back in 1977. I found him to be an excellent instructor with his door always open to his students.

May Staff Recognition Awards were presented to Lucille Cordova, Carolyn Gonzales, Ray More, Susan Quintana and Carol Vollbrecht at a President's Office ceremony Wednesday.
Students were subjected to some HIV/AIDS shock therapy Tuesday during World AIDS Day to help them realize just how prevalent the disease has become in society. The event, which was recognized internationally on Sunday, was held between the Duck Pond and Zimmerman Library and, according to event organizers, was to show the UNM community how close to home the epidemic is.

The victory marks the 13th straight victory for UNM over the Aggies and the Lobos' fourth home victory of the season as they outscored NMSU 86-75 in front of a season high crowd of 8,920 fans.

Staff Report Popular UNM history professor Richard Berthold announced his plans to retire in a statement Monday. Berthold stated "constant harassment by persons in authority at the University" as the reason for his retirement. Berthold said in a statement that he would like to continue teaching but that his retirement will take effect at the end of this semester.
Editor, The torching of the Youth in Transition drop-in center on Thanksgiving evening requires some sobering self-examination. I'm familiar with YIT. I've seldom seen an agency accomplish so much with so few resources. YIT serves homeless young people who have fallen through the cracks of mainstream systems of care.

Staff Report A UNM professor is playing a key role in improving the communication strategies that can be used to help control the spread of HIV/AIDS in developing nations. Everett Rogers, a Regents' Professor in the Communication and Journalism Department, has co-written a book, Combatting AIDS: Communication Strategies in Action, that details the importance of using communication strategies to influence government policy and gender relations in curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Editor, I think UNM President Chris Garcia missed the point with his endorsement of military security clearances at the school (Albuquerque Journal, Monday, Nov. 25.) The point to be questioned is why does anyone at a public institution of higher education engage in war research, secret or unclassified? These two institutions of our society, higher education and the Pentagon, are at odds in their goals, missions and methods of work and should be kept separate.
