Master's degree offered to study optical science Beginning in the fall semester, a new master's degree program in optical science and engineering will be available to students. Students will have a choice of three areas of emphasis: thesis, course and internship-based studies.

Once again, profit rears its pointy little head as our illustrious University has awarded the Pepsi Bottling Group an eight-year contract that will pay UNM about $1 million yearly and give exclusive bottled and fountain drink sales rights to the soft drink company.

Go climb a tree

Roberto Contreras, 19, of Southwest Tree Specialists, competes in the "Work Climb" during the Third Annual New Mexico State Tree Climbing Championships Saturday at Taylor Park. The event was co-sponsored by the UNM Physical Plant Department and featured five scored events. Competitors vied for a $500 chainsaw, a cash prize and the chance to represent New Mexico at the regional competition in Denver, Colo., June 15.

UNM center fielder Matt Young, was named to the freshmen All-American team by Collegiate Baseball magazine Wednesday. He was also was a first-team Mountain West Conference pick. Freshman third baseman Josh Mader was named to the honorable mention team.

The 3 Sided Hole existed from May 23-27 on a privately owned plot of land about one hour west of Albuquerque, overlooking the Rio Puerco Valley. Artists, musicians, poets and performers gathered to celebrate the building of a strong creative arts community and to preserve and restore the landscape of New Mexico.

Sports in brief

The UNM track team finished the season at the Mountain West Conference outdoor track championships May 18. The Lobo men finished fourth in the six-team field, while the women finished seventh in their eight-team field. Top finishers for the team were sophomore Mark Johnson, who won the men's decathlon, and junior Keren Sari-Bentzur, who placed third in the heptathlon. Both are participating in the NCAA outdoor track championships in Baton Rouge, La. this weekend. Also representing UNM at the NCAA championship is freshman high jumper Kelly Myers, who is ranked 11th in the country. The two Lobo women are the first to participate in the NCAA championships since 1998. Brigham Young University captured both the men's and women's championships.
