Baseball: Jared Mang latest Lobo to take home MW Player of the Week honors

For the fifth time this season, a Lobo baseball player was named Mountain West Player of the Week. This week it was sophomore outfielder Jared Mang who took the reigns. Mang hit .471 last week -- including a weekend series with Fresno State and a game at in-state foe New Mexico State. The healthy batting average was also accompanied by more impressive statistics, including eight runs scored and seven RBI.

Men’s Tennis: Lobos fall to Fresno, bounce back to beat Nevada at the weekend

The Lobos began their Mountain West Conference bid with a narrow loss to Fresno State and a decisive victory over the Nevada Wolfpack. Despite coming away with a split, the Lobos seemed encouraged by the performances over the weekend. The Lobos (8-10, 1-1 MW) played their first Conference match against Fresno State (12-10, 2-0 MW) at home. The Bulldogs beat UNM earlier in the season in a comprehensive 4-1 victory, but this time around, the Lobos made it much more difficult for the Bulldogs.

Rally Against Sexual Violence unites community, discusses progress

On Sunday, Civic Plaza was flooded with songs, speeches and support for those affected by sexual assault, in the hopes of eventually eliminating it altogether. As part of the Rally Against Sexual Violence, the UNM Office of Equal Opportunity, the LoboRESPECT Advocacy Center, the New Mexico National Guard, the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice, Planned Parenthood and other groups united to kick off Sexual Assault Awareness Month with the community-centered event.

Football: Ex-NFL head coach attends Lobo spring practice

The UNM football team had a special guest step on the field during Monday morning’s practice. “Chip” Kelly, former head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, is “charging the battery” and visiting teams across the nation to see what different programs are doing. He left University Stadium with a lot to say about head coach Bob Davie and the Lobos. “I’ve always wanted to get a chance to get down here and watch practice to see what they’re doing. I’m just really, really impressed with how he is running this program right now,” Kelly said.

Mentorship program for Black student athletes to be revitalized for fall semester

A UNM mentorship program for Black student athletes is being revamped for the fall semester. ZEAL, which stands for Zest for Excellence in Athletics and Learning, is a mentorship program based in African American Student Services. ZEAL pairs student athletes with mentors from the community and teaches skills like interviewing for jobs, communicating with professors and time management. Although it started in 2007, ZEAL began to dwindle in the last several years, according to Devon Williams, the program’s lead coordinator.

Post-Rock: An Introduction

Few genres of music manage to soundtrack the world quite like post-rock. A mixture of classical, jazz, rock, and a myriad of other styles, post-rock’s finest qualities can best be described in one word: cinematic. The music begs to be put behind a courageous hero as he confidently marches into certain death.  It is made to accompany agonized souls as they grieve over lost loved ones. It begins as the first sparks of sunlight peek through your window on a Sunday morning. It transforms even the most mundane moments of life into vivid portrayals of human existence. The history of post-rock can be divided into two chapters: the 1990’s and 21st century. The former, when the genre was still in its infancy, was much more minimalistic in its approach.

Local MC's album release party will feature live painting, fat beats

Local hip-hop artist and MC Def-I will premiere his newest project “Arrow•Rhymanics” in a special CD release party at the Launchpad on Saturday, April 8. A unique blend of live music and art, Def-I’s CD release will be a 21+ event that features many of Albuquerque’s newest and hottest MC’s, producers, and artists. “This is my fourth solo independent album, but it has various features and production from across the country. The name of the album is 'Arrow•Rhymanics' and it came about as my follow up to the last album, titled 'Shields for Raining Arrows.’” Def-I said. “I have many influences from all over, but my favorite MC and producer who highly influenced this album is Evidence of Dilated Peoples. I've been a fan of his and friend over the years.”

Beach Volleyball: Lobos win two matches, fall to the Wildcats at Spring Challenge

“Overall it was a great win and a solid weekend.” Lobo beach volleyball head coach Jeff Nelson had that to say in a release after the team changed its starting lineup at the last minute due to a migraine, and closed the Wildcat Spring Challenge with a 4-1 victory over Santa Clara on Saturday. The UNM beach volleyball team posted strong performances in Arizona this weekend as it took another win on Friday with its 5-0 sweep against CSU Bakersfield.

Letter: Universities are now about profit, not education

Editor, In all my years at UNM, acting President Abdallah is the only head of the school that I have seen who openly encourages community debate and discussion on controversial issues. This is the kind of openness and thinking that UNM and our state needs if we are to solve some of our social and economic crisis that seem to come rolling in like waves of low pressure weather off the Pacific coast. On the issue of the UNM budget problem, we have to face the unspeakable fact that the modern university is a business corporation with education as a side product and not a main mission.

Journalism students prepare for an evolving industry

As the news industry evolves alongside technological advancements, students in the UNM Communication and Journalism department are honing their multimedia and mobile reporting skills to meet the demands of future employers. Kate Nash Cunningham, a distinguished print journalist and UNM professor, said journalists must have the ability to portray a story on multiple platforms. “It used to be in journalism that students would go and write for the newspaper, and that was it,” she said. “You would go to the City Council, write the story, file it and go home. Now, a student who is working for a news organization or writing for their own blog, not only are they writing a story for deadline, they are going to be live tweeting, taking photos, sending video and audio.”

Ongoing exhibit seeks to destroy stigma of mental illness

The special exhibit titled “PhotoVoice: Untold Minds” has been on display at the UNM Zimmerman Library since the end of March, and will be holding a special event on Thursday, where individuals will be given the opportunity to meet PhotoVoice artists and mentors in the library from noon to 1:30 p.m. Michele Herling, executive director for Compassionate Touch Network, said the Mental Health Resource Center Fair which will take place the same day and will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.at the UNM SUB.

Several businesses suffering from ART

“No one wants to be on Central, not even the students,” Olympia Café owner Charlie Akkad said, frustrated over the restaurant’s 30 percent drop in revenue since the start of ART construction. “Mayor Richard Berry should have represented the people -- [ART] is a hindrance and it’s going at a snail’s pace.” Many owners and managers of local restaurants along Central Avenue echoed Akkad’s frustrations. Since the start of the project, many businesses in the area have experienced consistent drops in revenue, requiring them to cut hours and work with a smaller staff to prevent layoffs.

Baseball: Lobos sweep Fresno with solid pitching, economical hitting

A solid outing from starting pitcher Luis Gonzalez and a subsequent closing appearance from Carson Schneider was all the Lobos needed to grab a second win in its three-game series with Fresno State. Gonzalez, surrounded by a multitude of pro scouts, put on quite the performance on the mound. He pitched seven innings and allowed six hits and two runs, though he struck out five batters. “I love it,” Gonzalez said in response to going head-to-head with Fresno State’s starting pitcher, Ricky Thomas, who allowed two hits and three runs in six innings on the mound – and who’s also another prospect scouts were looking at. “I love the competition. Anytime you can get a good pitcher out there, it just brings out the best in all of us.

ART funding uncertain under Trump budget

Federal funding for the Albuquerque Rapid Transit project, otherwise known as ART, is in limbo after the proposed budget plan under the Trump Administration. The project's budget was originally formulated using federal funds for $69 million, more than half the total budget. The funds were to come through Obama's New Starts grant program, but the ART project has not officially secured the grant yet. President Trump's proposed budget is for the 2018 fiscal year, and cuts all funding for the project. ART funding is in Obama's 2017 budget, however, which Congress will deliberate on soon.

Guest Column: Roadblocks to reentry

It is 7:15 a.m., and I am standing 20-people back in a line outside the Midtown Public Health Office, where folks needing a birth certificate start congregating around 6:00 a.m. every weekday to claim one of the limited number of documents given out by the Vital Records department. One of my clients stares down at a phone without service, playing a game and lightheartedly fighting off a second client, who encroaches on the screen with a plastic ballpoint pen and says, “it’s a Stylus.” They both giggle, uncharacteristically joyful for the circumstances.

UNM rolls out 1-on-1 sexual assault training

Last week UNM, via email, notified students of the start of Department of Justice-mandated one-on-one sexual harassment and assault training. The DOJ last spring concluded a review of UNM’s policies and procedures that pertain to sexual assault response and prevention, to see if the University was in accordance with Title IX policy. The investigation prompted an agreement between UNM and the DOJ, which Torrez said gives UNM an outline “for how we are going to do the best job we can with Title IX and be in compliance with the law.”

Track and field: Lobos shine at home on a rainy Saturday

Practicing in the rain during the week turned out to be effective as the Lobo track and field team fought off chilling weather to shine on Saturday at the Great Friends of UNM Track & Field Stadium. In the only home meet of the outdoor season, New Mexico posted a strong performance with six titles and 15 top-three finishes in its outdoor season debut. Despite the hot start, UNM had to endure weather conditions that were not ideal, as some light snow flakes fell from the sky occasionally during the events.

The challenges of being a homeless student

In 2013, FAFSA reported more than 58,000 college students nationwide were experiencing homelessness. After the throes of a recession, Joseph Haynes became one of those students. When he was laid off in 2014, Haynes realized he did not have the right experience to get a job in a post-recession market, so he chose to go back to school — choosing education over a place to live, a degree over a hot meal and a warm bed.

Pair of UNM regents to continue serving past term

UNM Regents Jack Fortner and Bradley Hosmer will remain on the board passed their allotted terms after the New Mexico Senate did not complete the confirmation hearings necessary for their replacements during the recently-adjourned legislative session. The nominated replacements — former state Sen. John Ryan and Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce CEO Alex Romero — were selected by Gov. Susana Martinez and sent on for approval by the Senate Rules Committee. However, the session ended before these hearings could be held.
