Album of the Week: The Cloud Nothings' 'Life Without Sound'

Dylan Baldi is the man with the plan. He gripes with eloquence behind power chords and blistering drum patterns, armed to the teeth with dead-end lyrics to depict a grey, motionless world created with just three instruments. Cloud Nothings, like a plethora of other bands, was formed as a solo project on MySpace when Baldi could find time in his parents’ basement on the weekends to record everything himself.

Lobo earns scholarship for study at Cambridge

UNM chemical engineering student Julian Vigil was recently awarded the Churchill Scholarship, which will present him with the opportunity to study at The University of Cambridge in England among other accomplished scholars. “My family and friends have been wonderfully supportive throughout my undergraduate career, and I very much appreciate all of that support and the kind wishes I have received since hearing the news that I received the Churchill Scholarship,” Vigil said.

Baseball: Lobos look to get to Omaha

With the start of the 2017 season less than a week away for the University of New Mexico baseball team, the expectations set by both the team and the Mountain West Conference has never been higher, as well as the pressure. After being named the preseason favorites to win the Mountain West title by coaches around the conference, some Lobos believe that they are capable of going even further. “You always have to have those high expectations,” junior infielder Carl Stajduhar said of the Lobos being predicted to win the Mountain West.

NM legislators resist Trump's wall

A group of democratic state legislators are pushing to block President Donald Trump’s proposed U.S.-Mexico border wall. House Bill 292, proposed by New Mexico Rep. Javier Martinez, would block federal use of state land for building a wall between the state and Mexico. “The idea of dividing an entire people in or out is ludicrous,” Martinez said. Rep. Bill McCamley, who co-sponsored the bill, said he supports legislation to block a border barrier because it “would be a huge waste of money.”

Q&A: Reggae-rock-hip hop group Iration

Last week reggae-rock-hop fusion quintet Iration performed at Sunshine Theater, cultivating some warm vibes on a rather dreary day to a crowd. I hadn't heard of the group before their management contacted the Lobo, and even then I was still quite skeptical. However essential the genre is to the indie climate, reggae rock has never been my strong suite, and I often grow bored of shows that don't change up the flavor per say. The general mood of the show didn't really change throughout — at the very least, it was a jovial vibe. On a technical level Iration isn't worth writing home about, and that's okay. Fans seemed to be having a jubilant time and the theater was packed to the brim with a friendly ambiance. Iration have years of experience in writing, playing and evoking that sunshine aura they grew up with, and Albuquerque deserves some of that musical daybreak in this windy grey winter.

Holm loses title fight in controversial fashion

UFC 208’s main event — a newly formed featherweight title fight between Germaine de Randamie and Albuquerque’s own Holly Holm — didn't pan out the way the former champion expected. On Saturday night, Holm lost a unanimous decision, 48-47, to de Randamie (7-3) in a highly controversial ending. Illegal shots after the bell were fired off by de Randamie at the end of rounds two and three. But neither instance resulted in a point deduction or disqualification.

Track and Field: Men's distance runners pace string of strong Lobo performances

Eyeing the Mountain West and NCAA Championships in a few weeks, a squad of Lobo Track and Field runners shined this weekend in preparation for regionals and national competition. Redshirt freshman Josh Kerr posted a pace-setting performance with his title in the men’s one-mile run at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday. Kerr’s new personal record of 4:03.34 — good for second in the conference — moves him up to No. 8 in the event’s national rankings.

Men's Tennis: Lobos to take on Cal Poly and Loyola Marymount in California

After two weeks without any matches, the Lobos are back on the road to take on Cal Poly and Loyola Marymount in San Luis Obispo, California. The Lobos (1-4) are coming off of an impressive 4-0 victory against Boise State (1-6). The Lobos have developed a rivalry with the Broncos and will be hoping to carry the momentum from that match into the weekend. Cal Poly (2-2) also recently played Boise State, winning 6-1 back on January 23rd. But the Mustangs are coming off of a 7-0 loss to Oregon, and have so far been unable to put together consecutive wins.

Let's talk about Deftones

When I was a kid I exclusively listened to one band. They essentially defined my childhood with puncturing screams, vicious riffs and raps over the nu-metal cacophony that made my little 12-year-old fists want to punch various household objects. It laid down the groundwork for a very angst-ridden teenage era that, looking back, was beneficial in terms of appreciating music. Even as a small little dude that looked up music videos on Yahoo Music in 2002 — this band was the master of cheesy, vague lyrics that would convey various shades of the same recycled, angry emotions.

KIVA Club reaffirms mission to abolish the UNM seal

The effort to abolish the UNM seal — which some on campus have accused of being offensive — began in a campus apartment, and although the fight has come a long way, it’s not over. UNM KIVA Club has proposed a seal abolition to many levels of administration and, even after a frustrating November Board of Regents vote to continue using the seal, the group has not given up. On Wednesday, the group revisited its effort to abolish the seal, and reaffirmed is dedication to activism for future generations.

After travel ban, Iranian Student Association provides info to students at teach-in

There were more people than seats at an Iranian Student Association-organized teach-in Thursday to help international students understand the effects and status of President Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration, as well as their rights and the work being done in Albuquerque to support them. Micah McCoy, the communications director for American Civil Liberties Union New Mexico; Linda Melville, a representative of the Global Education Office; and Sammia Assad from the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice formed the panel. Parya Nickbeen, a graduate student and head of the ISA, hosted the event.

Local group meets, discusses ways to resist Trump

Excitement, joy and applause sprouted from every corner of a crowded room where community members gathered with a plan of action: stop President Donald Trump. Founded by Barbara Lemaire, the Nob Hill chapter of Indivisible held its second meeting at local restaurant Canvas Artistry Wednesday evening. A nationwide organization founded by activists and former congressional staffers, Indivisible’s goal is to proactively resist Trump’s political agenda.

Men's Basketball: Logwood steps up as Lobos improve to .500 on the road

The Lobos stayed hot on the road and took a 74-67 victory over the Air Force Falcons on Wednesday night, New Mexico’s first win in Colorado Springs in over five years. The win improved the Lobos’ record to 15-10 overall and 8-5 in the Mountain West conference, and dropped Air Force to 15-10, 8-5 MW. Several factors played a role in New Mexico’s success. “We didn't turn the ball over tonight," UNM head coach Craig Neal said in a release. "We made timely shots and made some threes."

Baseball: Lobos picked to finish first in the Mountain West

The Mountain West released its annual season preview on Wednesday, setting high expectations for UNM baseball. New Mexico was voted the preseason conference winners for the 2017 season. Three Lobos were also voted preseason All-Conference. The Lobos, who won the Mountain West tournament in the season prior, picked up four first-place votes, narrowly beating out Fresno State, which received three first-place votes. Last season the Lobos finished 39-23 on the season and reached the NCAA postseason for the fifth time in the last seven years, according to GoLobos.com.

HSC holds symposium on childhood adversity

On Tuesday evening the Health and Sciences Center held a symposium to address the issues of childhood adversity affecting New Mexico. Dr. Andrew Hsi, professor of pediatrics at UNM’s medical school and a key figure in UNM’s fight against childhood adversity, walked on stage for his presentation with a large, black trash bag thrown over his shoulder. Hsi dropped the bag on the floor as he said that it was a visual presentation of the burden children and families carry with them after adverse childhood experiences. Being involved in the field of childhood and family adversity for over 27 years with FOCUS, a division of UNM’s Center for Development and Disability, Hsi knows the weight all too well.

#YouAreWelcomeHere Campaign Embraces UNM’s Diversity

Lights. Camera. Equality. Yesterday, students, staff, faculty and community members gathered at the SUB Atrium, taking photographs and short videos, sharing pins reading “welcome” in various languages and creating a short film. This was part of an effort to appreciate diversity at UNM through the #YouAreWelcomeHere Campaign. Danielle Gilliam, the administrative officer at the UNM Global Education Office, said the #YouAreWelcomeHere Campaign has already been brought to over 20 other universities.
