Track and Field: Lobos kick off indoor season with home meet

The New Mexico track and field team will kick off its indoor season at the Cherry and Silver Invitational in Albuquerque at the ABQ Convention Center on Friday.

Arson and criminal trespass at Woodward II On Jan. 8, a UNMPD officer was dispatched to Woodward II at 700 Lomas Blvd. NE in reference to a fire alarm, according to a report. UNM dispatch was unable to identify the exact location of the fire alarm within the building.

Student government leaders looks ahead to 2017

ASUNM and GPSA hope to surpass their accomplishments from last semester by increasing student engagement, introducing new legislation and advocating to the State Legislature on UNM Day. GPSA President Glenda Lewis and ASUNM President Biederwolf, along with the Governmental Affairs team, will be in Santa Fe on Jan. 30 for UNM Day to speak to legislators about the importance of saving the Lottery Scholarship and other initiatives important to UNM. “The Lottery Scholarship is in danger of losing many portions of its funding, and lawmakers will need to act this session in order to keep New Mexico higher education accessible for all students,” Biederwolf said. Lewis said they are “definitely” in preparations for UNM Day, and hope to see a successful outcome from this year’s event. Lewis said she wants to “start the spring semester with a bang.” One of her goals is to increase student engagement and find how to better serve the students.

ASUNM prepares for UNM Day at the Roundhouse

ASUNM Governmental Affairs is offering a training for anyone wanting to be a team advocate for UNM Day, a day when the New Mexico State Legislature focuses on UNM-specific issues. These advocates travel to Santa Fe every year to meet legislators and lobby for issues that benefit UNM students. “With the capitol in Santa Fe, it creates distance between the legislature and students,” ASUNM Governmental Affairs Executive Assistant Royce Dellar said. “UNM Day allows legislators to put a name to a face.” Executive Director Nathan Cowan and his assistants Dellar and Jack Hodge started with a video highlighting “What to Expect” as an advocate. It presented UNM Day as an opportunity for UNM organizations to head to the state capitol to talk about what is most important to them. The 20-minute training session outlines what is means to be an advocate, and how to best interact with legislators and other professionals in Santa Fe.

Governor has yet to name new UNM regents

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez has yet to nominate the replacements for three UNM regents, despite their tenures having ended on Dec. 31. With the 60-day state legislative session beginning this week, it might be hard for her to find time to name replacements, who must then be confirmed by a Senate committee before starting work on the Board. According to the UNM Board of Regents website, the tenures of Regents Jack Fortner and Bradley Hosmer technically ended last month, as well as the tenure of Student Regent Ryan Berryman. Berryman graduated in December, and has since sent an official letter of resignation to Martinez, according to University officials.

TV Review: "A Series of Unfortunate Events" stays true to the books

It’s a common trend in film to adapt novels and other stories to the silver screen and create a visual interpretation of our favorite books and stories. We’ve seen it with the Harry Potter series, The Hunger Games and many Disney films, but with the rise of streaming sites like Netflix, adaptations have come to the small screen. On Friday the 13th, Netflix premiered it’s long anticipated exclusive show, “A Series of Unfortunate Events.” The series, being teased for nearly a year, is an adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s series of the same name, and is the second adaptation of the books. While the first was a standalone film that covered the first three books in the series, Netflix’s rendition presents the series in long-form television, allowing for all thirteen books to be adapted for the visual medium.

Restaurant Review: Mazaya Cafe delivers mouthwatering Mediterranean

It’s a new semester, and luckily there’s a new restaurant in the neighborhood that’s perfect for a quick meal on a student budget. The Mazaya Cafe, located on Harvard Drive right across from Main Campus, serves up an impressive range of Mediterranean-fusion dishes at very reasonable prices. A few months ago the manager Rojesh Maharjan and his team moved into their current location, a spot that has seen several restaurants come and go in the last couple years. Despite the apparent curse on the location, Mazaya has been slowly winning over loyal customers, and this reviewer is now one of them. Walking in the front door, I was immediately struck by the cleanliness and the beautiful Mediterranean-style decor. We sat down at a comfy booth under a big screen TV tuned to ESPN. We started with the lentil soup, which was shockingly flavorful and filling thanks to the chicken broth. For $3, this could easily be a light lunch on a cold day all by itself.

2016 was very much, in almost every way, a calendar year. Things happened. People reacted. Sometimes things didn’t happen. That was okay too. Personally, my favorite part was the music. In this cold post-Bowie world we live in, it’s becoming more worthwhile to take a step back, lay down in the cool metaphorical lawn of time, and thoroughly listen to some jams that have the potential to really animate the senses. Finding a righteous album can make one’s week, nay, one’s year — dare I suggest a lifetime? Considering that songs we found as children still find ways into our Spotify playlists, that is.

Student groups write letter to University admin criticizing Yiannopoulos visit

As the visit of controversial Breitbart writer Milo Yiannopoulos looms ever nearer, local opposition to his arrival and speaking event is ramping up. A slew of UNM student groups have placed their names on a letter sent to University administration earlier this week condemning the upcoming event to be held Jan. 27 in the SUB, calling it a contradiction of UNM policy. The letter alleges that Yiannopoulos’ talk will lead to “physical violence and expand bias against us,” referring to undocumented students, indigenous students, Muslims, LGBTQ and other minority members of the UNM community whose concerns are raised in the letter.

Letter: Martin Luther King Jr. was a prophet

Prophet Martin Luther King, Jr. damned the Vietnam War in his most controversial speech on April 4, 1967 – exactly one year before he was assassinated. King damned the U.S. mass murder of Vietnamese people. King said, “The greatest purveyor of violence in the world today is my own government.” The New York Times, the Washington Post, many newspapers nationwide condemned his strong message of truth. Many whites, many blacks, the White House, even most of King’s inner circle of black leaders condemned his strong message of truth. He suffered much hatred, many death threats.

Men's Basketball: UNM survives second-half scare to post back-to-back wins

The UNM men’s basketball team grabbed an 81-70 victory over Boise State at the Taco Bell Arena, taking “Taco Tuesday” to a whole new level in handing the Broncos their first home loss of the season. The Lobos have posted back-to-back wins, both of which game on the road in tough venues. They improve their record to 11-8 overall and 4-3 in the Mountain West conference. “I am proud of these guys,” head coach Craig Neal said in a release. “They have been through a lot the last two weeks, but it has made us stronger as a group." New Mexico led the game wire-to-wire, with senior center Obij Aget putting up the first points of the game from the free throw line.

Women's Basketball: Lobos try to snap two-game skid in home tilt vs Broncos

The University of New Mexico women's basketball team will have its hands full on Wednesday night in WisePies Arena, as they host the Boise State Broncos. New Mexico (8-8, 4-2 Mountain West) will enter the game coming off a crushing home loss against Colorado State – a team that drained 18 three-pointers to take a decisive 78-63 victory, despite the Lobos leading in almost every statistical category. The defeat put the Lobos back at an even .500 for the season and on a two-game losing streak. Both losses were critical as they came against in-conference opponents.

Search for next UNM president still ongoing

The Board of Regents last semester began the process of searching for UNM’s next president, preparing for a smooth transition as well as preparing to place previous UNM P Bob resident Frank in a new position in the Center for Innovation in Health and Education on North Campus. The search — which now is being conducted by a group of individuals from various facets around the University — has since solicited community input via forums, the last being held on Nov. 11. The search committee has also held its first two meetings since the process began, according to UM Regents President Robert Doughty.

Men's Basketball: Lobos eye win streak against one of the top MW teams

The Lobos snapped a three-game losing streak in their last game, but will have to pass a tough away test against one of the top teams in the conference to start a winning streak. New Mexico (10-8, 3-3 MW) will hit the road to take on Boise State (11-5, 4-1 MW). The Broncos are in a tie for first place in the Mountain West with Nevada, but the Wolf Pack have a better overall record at 15-3 on the season. Boise State had been undefeated in league play, but dropped its first conference game to Fresno State on Saturday, 89-80. New Mexico got back in the win column by taking down Colorado State, 84-71, also on Saturday.

How UNM is working to reduce its carbon footprint

With the upcoming legislative session, the state government is looking to make big cuts in higher education. Last year, the University of New Mexico tended to their carbon footprint by implementing multiple large-scale sustainability efforts and, for their efforts, PNM awarded UNM three Energy Star Awards to acknowledge efforts to decrease energy consumption across campus. Here are a few of the efforts that resulted in UNM having received this recognition, as well as ongoing efforts for the future.

MLK March unites the community

On Saturday morning, a march honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. began near campus before making its way to Civic Plaza downtown. The march not only celebrated the work of the Civil Rights Movement, but promoted unity within the community. It including an array of groups such as La Raza Unida, the Macedonia Baptist Church, Daniels family funeral service, CNM outreach and the New Mexico Dream Team. Sayrah Namaste said she attends the event yearly, but marched with the group La Raza Unida this year.

ABQ Comic Con draws huge crowds

Last weekend the nerds, geeks and superfans of Albuquerque descended on the Convention Center downtown for three days of fandom, photo ops and costumed revelry. The 7th annual Albuquerque Comic Con brought a long list of cult celebrities, comic artists and vendors to all three floors of the Convention Center, attracting an estimated 30,000 fans. The size of the event was truly impressive, with an endless maze of vendor and artist booths. One could wander for hours around one of the many large ballrooms and still not see everything that was on display. Jim Burleson, the owner and promoter of Albuquerque Comic Con, said that the size and scope of the event has been years in the making.
