The Lobos seem to be flourishing this spring. Four matches against four different opponents and the UNM men’s soccer team has yet to walk away with a loss.
An already underwhelming weekend came to an even more disappointing end, as New Mexico was blown out 11-1 by the mercy rule in five innings, completing a sweep by No. 23 Fresno State on Sunday. Things did not go well for the Lobos all afternoon, as UNM gave up at least one run in all five innings and switched pitchers three times. “We made way too many mistakes pitching. We made way too many lazy mistakes on defense today that ended up costing us,” head coach Erica Beach said.
Randy Ko is more than just your typical candidate for the president of the student body. He is unique and necessary because he is a commuter student like the vast majority of us students, a rarity in student body presidents. He lives in the reality that many students could be more involved in the university and seeks to show students that there is something at the University for everyone. Student collaboration defines student success by giving them connections and experiences that will stay with them for a lifetime.
“I think he’s the first guy that I’ve ever coached that has a tongue ring ... he’s a unique guy,” said dead coach Bob Davie of defensive lineman Johnny Williams. He said it is just one of many interesting things that make Williams a renaissance man and “a real dude”. The defensive lineman plays with a high motor all the time. Davie said he had to tell him three times during practice not to tackle guys in the no-contact drills. His personality appears to be just as intense as his play, perhaps even more. Williams, 24, took a unique path on his way back to the football field and the classroom. He said he competed in MMA for three years at his hometown of Hemet, California.
Fresno State has not enjoyed much success in Albuquerque. The Bulldogs are now just 1-14 when playing UNM on its home turf following Sunday’s 7-4 loss to the Lobos. “Fresno hates to come here,” head coach Ray Birmingham said.
It's not hard to find good experimental rock bands in Albuquerque, but the three musicians that make up CRTTRZ are bound to make an emphatic first impression. Formed in 2012, the band consists of guitarist and lead vocalist Gabriel Fuentes, bassist Tony Rivali and drummer Joel Martin. CRTTRZ, pronounced “Critters”, was created by Fuentes who leads the band lyrically and instrumentally. “When I was a kid, I knew I wanted to be a musician,” Fuentes said. “My dad is a painter and sculptor, growing up there were a lot of artistic influences. I would watch YouTube videos and just learn everything I could about guitar and piano.”
In life, Anthony Hopper’s father never wanted to discuss the end. When he passed away, Hopper said his family was unsure of his father’s wishes and faced interpersonal tensions while trying to make decisions on his behalf. Stories like Hopper’s inspired the creation of National Healthcare Decisions Day, which was established to provide valuable information and tools for individuals to use as they begin advanced healthcare planning . According to a study on the NHDD website, although many Americans were aware of living wills and had considered end-of-life preferences, only 29 percent actually had a living will. “There’s still an underlying feeling: did we do just what he wanted us to do or not?” said Hopper, PE/MOSSA Determiner for the Affordable Care Act Team at UNM’s Community Engagement Center.
Senator John McCain recently criticized the US war effort against ISIS. In a letter to Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, McCain said, “My conversations with military commanders both on the ground and in the Pentagon have led me to the disturbing, yet unavoidable conclusion that they have been reduced from considering what it will take to win to what they will be allowed to do by this administration.”
Members of the UNM Veterans Resource Center, alongside Student Veterans of UNM, held a “Veterans Sound Off” day at the SUB on Friday. The event was a unified effort to combat stigmas surrounding the student-veteran community and gain scholastic engagement through reaching out to the on-campus veteran community.
Last Friday evening, Hadley and Peter Arnold, co-directing founders of the Arid Lands Institute, a research, education, and outreach institute based in Los Angeles, California, returned to Albuquerque to deliver a lecture on campus. Their lecture stressed the importance of enacting policies that would revolutionize the means by which society conducts hydrology. The Arnolds are considered among the most transformative figures in the field and are often regarded as leading proponents of hydrologic theoretics. A few hours before the start of their presentation, the Arnolds sat down for a brief interview with the Daily Lobo.

An early lead was not enough for New Mexico in game two against No. 23 Fresno State on Saturday as the Lobos fell to Fresno State 2-1. Despite being up 2-1 heading into the sixth, UNM was unable to hold the slim lead, dropping the series against the Bulldogs.
A late comeback, extra innings and a wild finish garnered a series win for New Mexico during Saturday afternoon’s 14-13 win over Fresno State. Unlike the opening game of UNM’s three-game home stand, the game went to the offensive side as the Lobos homered six times and collected 11 extra-base hits during Saturday’s four-hour and one-minute contest. The Bulldogs collected five extra-base hits on the day to put up their 13 runs.
WWE’s biggest annual event WrestleMania came and went this past weekend, leaving most fans with a unpleasant taste in their mouths. The 32nd incarnation of WrestleMania delivered with solid matches but had some of the most questionable booking decisions in quite some time. Let’s breakdown exactly what happened this weekend in Dallas, Texas.
New Mexico took sole possession of first place in the Mountain West after Friday night’s 2-1 victory over Fresno State. However, that doesn’t mean much as the Bulldogs will remain in town for the weekend with the intent to surpass UNM. Before first pitching Saturday, the Lobos will be able to enjoy first place thanks to starting pitcher Carson Schneider's gem on Friday.
New Mexico’s offense plated five runs, but the pitching staff couldn’t hold No. 23 Fresno State in an 11-5 loss in the series opener on Saturday night. The Bulldogs sent out its star pitcher Jill Compton (14-4, 2.66 ERA), but the Lobos found success early on at the plate against her. However, poor pitching of their own, as well as some defensive miscues, would lead to the loss for UNM.
A petition urging state lawmakers to introduce additional clean energy legislation at the next state legislature found its way onto campus last week, and the Daily Lobo spoke with founder and head of the UNM Sustainability Studies program, Bruce Milne, about the future possibilities of clean energy for NM.
Glenda Lewis of the College of Education will be the next president of the Graduate and Professional Student Association, according to a GPSA announcement. Lewis said she plans to bring a lot to the position and intends to foster relationships between UNM administration and departments as well as graduate and undergraduate students. “My campaign slogan was ‘Re-Thinking Engagement,’ and I firmly believe that we, as a Division I research institution, have to reconsider what engagement really means and come together as a community,” she said. “If we only stay within our departments we are missing out on the opportunity to not only network, but engage in interdisciplinary scholarship and research."
Associated Students of UNM, in collaboration with UNM Police, held Safety Day on Wednesday, an opportunity for the student government to directly reach out to students about their most pressing concerns regarding security on campus. ASUNM officials said the initiative was something being planned for a few months as a chance for students to have their voice heard. “It’s been one of the bigger outreach events we’ve had all semester,” said ASUNM Legislative Coordinator Noah Michelsohn. “I don’t think many students know about UNMPD, so it’s good to get students talking to them as well so that they know what their actual purpose is.”
This year, UNM is one of 10 schools nationwide to participate in the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers Recruitment Challenge, which is facilitated by EdVenture Partners, a “match-making nonprofit” that hosts annual collegiate competitions.
