Men's Tennis: Lobos split California double header

The New Mexico men’s tennis team earned a split in California on Saturday in a doubleheader against UC Irvine and Pepperdine. Head Coach Bart Scott shook things up by separating doubles partners Hayden Sabatka and Bart Van Leijsen. The pair began the season as the eighth ranked doubles team in the nation.

Softball: Lobos open season 2-3 at Arizona tourney

The New Mexico softball team opened its 2016 season with two wins and three losses at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Arizona, over the weekend. The Lobos started the tournament Friday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over San Diego, with runs from right fielder Jade Gray and shortstop Michala Erickson.

Alternative rock band Great States is comprised of Lobo pack members

Everyone’s a Lobo, or at least used to be. Members of alternative rock band Great States are proof of “once a Lobo, always a Lobo,” since all members are UNM alumni and said they’re still fond of their time here. In 2010, a series of coincidences (like random roommate assignments) brought keyboardist Sean Leston, front man Morgan Ching, bassist Eric Jecklin and drummer Ryan Rael together.


The Albuquerque Police Department plans to reasses its policies and training with regards to the treatment of the mentally ill.

APD aims to reassess use of force with mentally ill

Use of excessive force and the handling of mentally ill individuals have been significant issues for law enforcement in Albuquerque, but despite national attention and heavy scrutiny, Albuquerque Police Department, the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department and UNM personnel have steadily corrected the issue.

Two new UNM regents confirmed

The New Mexico Senate confirmed two regents to the UNM Board of Regents on Monday, according to a UNM press release, “in a process that turned out to be not quite smooth.” The pair confirmed by Senate, are current Student Regent Ryan Berryman of Sandia Park, an MBA student at the Anderson School of Management. The other is current Regent Marron Lee, who comes from “a Cibola County ranching family that has long supported UNM and in fact gifted the University with its first live Lobo,” according to the release. Berryman said that he was both humbled and honored to be confirmed by members of the New Mexico Senate.

Men's Basketball: Cullen Neal criticism gone too far, coach says

Criticism of Cullen Neal has crossed the line, New Mexico coach Craig Neal said Thursday afternoon, even elevating to threats. The Lobo sophomore point guard, also the most polarizing player on this year’s squad, has already changed his phone number twice and removed his social media accounts from Facebook and Twitter, Craig Neal said, as criticism against his son has increased. “Put yourself in his shoes.

Conference appoints 60 Lobos to All-Academic squad

Less than two weeks after New Mexico announced its highest GPA among student-athletes in program history, the Mountain West appointed 60 individuals to the All-Academic honorees. It was the third most in conference, but the highest in New Mexico student-athlete history. It was also the first time UNM has had back-to-back years of sending 60 or more student-athletes to the All-Academic team after sending 61, the highest in program history, a year ago.

Letter: Beating kids creates pain, cycle of abuse

A man beaten horribly as a kid by his alcoholic father learned to endure the beatings with not even a whimper in order not to give his father the satisfaction of seeing his pain. As a grown man he is totally incapable of showing any signs of pain or sorrow. Many people think he is a cold fish, but he says they have no idea what goes on inside him.

Women's Tennis: Lobos host Denver University

The New Mexico women’s tennis team will try to get back in the win column when it returns home to host Denver University on Friday. The Lobos dropped two consecutive contests in Minneapolis, Minnesota last weekend at the Courtside Classic, losing to Mississippi State 1-6 and Minnesota 2-5.

Lecture encourages students to examine how race is dealt with in US

Tuesday afternoon Dr. Tyson E.J. Marsh discussed the history of African-American culture, neoliberalism and, ultimately, what it means to be Black, in his lecture, “Everybody Wants to be Black Until It’s Time to be Black.” “The talk is informed by the appropriation and commodification of Black culture and the critical need to reclaim cultural tools of resistance in the struggle for racial and economic justice against what Bell Hooks has aptly named imperialist-White-supremacist-capitalist-patriarchy,” Marsh said, prior to the lecture.
